WIND POWER
WHAT IS WIND POWER?
“Wind power” is a term used to describe the
process by which the wind is used to generate
mechanical power or electricity. Wind and
waves are caused by the effects of the Sun.
HOW IS WIND CREATED?
At night, the winds are reversed because
air cools more rapidly over land than it
does over water.

During the day, air above land heats up

faster than air above water. Warm air
expands and rises, causing heavier,
cooler
air to rush in and take its place, creating
wind.
RENEWABLE OR NON-
RENEWABLE?

Wind power is renewable and it provides

electricity without burning any fuel or
polluting the air.
USES OF WIND POWER
Grain Milling
The wind’s energy is transferred
via a system of shafts, cogs and
belts. Grain is ground into meal.

Generating Electricity
Wind turns the propeller of a
turbine which spins a generator, creating
electricity.

Pumping Water
Water pumping windmills start
lifting water when wind speed approaches
8-10 km/h.
ENERGY TRANSFERS

Wind turbines transform mechanical

energy into electrical energy.

First it takes kinetic energy from air

and converts it to a rotary motion. This
rotational energy is transferred by a
shaft to the generator to produce
electricity.
