Ax + By = C, variable is not 1.
3. If the variable is in the denominator
4. If the two variables are in one same

Recall: Linear Equations in One Variable

Solution – is the value of the variable that will satisfy the

equation.

Example:
What is the solution to the equation 2x + 4 = 6?
Example:

A technical pen (x) cost P15. 00 and a regular pen (y) cost P5.00 determine
how many each kind of pens Jessa can buy for P75.00.

We can use the equation 15x + 5y = 75.

Complete the table to find how many each kind of pens Jessa can buy for P75.00

Solutions of Linear Equations in Two Variables.

• Ordered pairs (x, y) that satisfy the linear equation or can

make the equation true.
• The set of all solutions of linear equations in two variables is
called GRAPH.
• The graph of a linear equation is a straight line.
Solution or Not?

Determine if the given ordered pair is a solution of

x + 3y = 8.

1. (2, 2)
2. (-1, 3)
3. (-2, -2)
Practice:

Determine if the given ordered pair is a solution of

x + 4y = 7.

1. (3, 1)
2. (-1, 2)
3. (2, -1)
Seatwork #4:

given equation.

1. y = 3x + 4; (2, 10)
2. 7x – 4y = 13; (3, 2)
3. 2x – 3y = 8; (-3, -8)

SLOPE of a Line

The World’s Slowest Fish

A sea horse moves around the ocean at
just 15 meters per hour. At this rate , how
far will the sea horse be able to travel in
2 hours? 3 hours? 4 hours? 5 hours?
SLOPE
- - Refers to the steepness of the line.
- Defined as the ratio of the vertical rise of the
line to its corresponding run.

Slope =

The slope of nonvertical line containing the

points with coordinates (x1, y1) and (x2, y2) is
defined by the formula:
m=
where x2 x1.
Example:
Finding the slope of a line, given two points on the line.

1. Find the slope of the line that passes through

(4, 5) and (2, 1).

By formula: m =

By graph: Plot the two points

m=

m=2
More examples:

1. Find the slope of the line that passes through (2, 3) and (-1, 2).
2. Find the slope of the line that passes through (-3, 4) and (1, -2).
3. Find the slope of the line that passes through (0,3) and (4, -1).
4. Find the slope of the line that passes through (-5, 1) and (0, -1).
5. Find the slope of the line that passes through (3, 2) and (3, -3).
6. Find the slope of the line that passes through (0, 1) and (3, 1).
REMEMBER:

1. If the graph is going upwards from left to right, the slope is POSITIVE. (/)

2. If the graph is going downwards from left to right, the slope is NEGATIVE. (\)

3. If the graph is horizontal line (having same y-coordinates), the slope is 0.

4. If the graph is vertical line (having same x-coordinates), the slope is

It refers to the value

It refers to the value

Slope – intercept Form:
y – intercept  The point that the graph passes through
the y –axis.

Slope: m =

Slope-Intercept Form:
y = mx + b

In slope-intercept form, we convert the standard form Ax

+ By = C into an equation wherein the slope and the y-
intercept is known.
Converting from Standard Form to Slope – Intercept Form:

Slope-intercept form: y = mx + b
SLOPE y - intercept

Examples: 3. 6x + 4y = -8
1. x + y = 0 4. 3x – 4y = 0
2. -2(x + 3y) = 12 5. 9x – 3y = 18
Converting from Slope – Intercept Form to Standard Form:

y = mx + b  Ax + By = C

Examples: 4. y = + 10
1. y = x -1 5. y = 4x
2. y = + 2
3. y = -2x + 5

Form to its equivalent Slope- Intercept Formto its equivalent
Intercept Form. Standard Form.

1. 5(x + 3y) = -15 1. y = 2x + 4

2. 2x – 5y = 10 2. y = 9x + 3
3. 5x – y = -10 3. y = -4x + 3
4. 7x – 7y = 0 4. y= –1
5. -2x + 4y = 12 5. y= +5
