introduction
Respiratory disease is a type of disease
that affects the lungs and other parts of
the respiratory system. Respiratory
diseases may be caused by infection, by
smoking tobacco, or by breathing in
secondhand tobacco smoke, radon,
asbestos, or other forms of air pollution.
01
ASTHMA
DEFINITIONS
Asthma is a disease that affects
your lungs. It is one of the most
common long-term diseases of
children, but adults can have
asthma, too.
CAUSES
Asthma is triggered by the
presences of
dust,pollen,haze,smoke from
cigarette,motor vehicle
exhaust,open burning and
forest fires.
SYMPTOMS
• Shortness of breathing
• Wheezing
• Coughing
If you have asthma, the inside walls of the
airways in your lungs can become inflamed and
swollen. In addition, membranes in your airway
linings may secrete excess mucus. The result is
an asthma attack. During an asthma attack, your
narrowed airways make it harder to breathe, and
you may cough and wheeze.
TREATMENT
THERES CURRENTLY NO CURE FOR
ASTHMA,BUT TREATMENT CAN
CONTROL THE SYMPTOMS SO
YOUR ABLE TO LIVE A NORMAL
AND ACTIVE
LIFE.INHALERS,WHICH ARE
DEVICES THAT LET YOU BREATHE
IN MEDICINE,ARE THE MAIN
TREATMENT.TABLETS AND OTHER
TREATMENTS MAY ALSO BE
NEEDED IF YOUR ASTHMA IS
SEVERE.
02
BRONCHITIS
DEFINITION
BRONCHITIS IS AN
INFECTION OF THE
MAIN AIRWAYS OF THE
LUNGS (BRONCHI),
CAUSING THEM TO
BECOME IRRITATED
AND INFLAMED.
CAUSES
Bronchitis is an inflammation of the bronchus caused by tar and
irritants in cigarette smoke
SYMPTOMS
The main symptoms is cough, which may bring up yellow-grey
mucus.Bronchitis may also cause a sore throat and wheezing.
TREATMENT
You can manage the symptoms of bronchitis at home with over-
the-counter medicine and rest.Running a humidifer or taking warm
showers can help loosen mucus and make breathing easier.
03
EMPHYSEM
A
DEFINITIONS
Emphysema is the condition of alveoli in
the lungs which are damaged by harmful
substances in the air such as irritants in
cigarette smoke.
CAUSES
Emphysema is generally caused by cigarette smoking or long-
term exposure to certain industrial pollutants or dusts. A small
percentage of cases are caused by a familial or genetic
disorder, alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency(condition that raises
your risk for lung and other diseases).
SYMPTOMS
Symptoms of emphysema include shortness of
breath.pain when breathing and feeling tired from doing
even a light task.
TREATMENT
THERE IS NO CURE FOR EMPHYSEMA, ALTHOUGH IT
IS TREATABLE. APPROPRIATE MANAGEMENT CAN
REDUCE SYMPTOMS, IMPROVE YOUR QUALITY OF
LIFE AND HELP YOU STAY OUT OF HOSPITAL.
Management include:
• Stop smoking immediately and completely
– this is the most effective treatment for
COPD and emphysema
• Avoiding other air pollutants
• Oxygen treatment, in advanced
cases
• Gentle, regular exercise to improve
overall fitness

LUNG
CANCER
DEFINITIONS
Lung cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the
lungs. Your lungs are two spongy organs in your chest
that take in oxygen when you inhale and release
carbon dioxide when you exhale.Lung cancer is the
leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide. There are 4
stages of lung cancer.
WHAT ARE THE STAGES
OF LUNG CANCER?
• Occult stage: Cancer cells can be picked up in the • STAGE II: THE DISEASE MAY HAVE
mucus you cough up. Your tumor can’t be seen on SPREAD TO YOUR LYMPH NODES NEAR
imaging scans or a biopsy. It’s also called hidden YOUR LUNGS.
cancer. • STAGE III: IT HAS SPREAD FURTHER INTO
• STAGE 0: YOUR TUMOR IS VERY SMALL. YOUR LYMPH NODES AND THE MIDDLE
CANCER CELLS HAVEN’T SPREAD INTO OF YOUR CHEST.
• STAGE IV: CANCER HAS SPREAD WIDELY
YOUR DEEPER LUNG TISSUES OR AROUND YOUR BODY. IT MAY HAVE
• OUTSIDE YOUR LUNGS.
STAGE I: CANCER IS IN YOUR LUNG SPREAD TO YOUR BRAIN, BONES, OR
TISSUES BUT NOT YOUR LYMPH NODES. LIVER.
CAUSES
• Lung cancer is caused by cancer causing chemical
substances known as carcinogens.These chemical
substances are inhaled during breathing.Cigarette
smoke contains various carcinogens for example tar
that causes lung cancer.

• People who smoke have the greatest risk of lung

cancer, though lung cancer can also occur in people
who have never smoked. The risk of lung cancer
increases with the length of time and number of
cigarettes you've smoked.
SYMPTOMS
• Lung cancer typically doesn't cause signs and
symptoms in its earliest stages.Signs and
symptoms of lung cancer typically occur when
the disease is advanced.
Signs and symptoms of lung cancer may
include:
• A new cough that doesn't go away
• Coughing up blood, even a small amount
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Hoarseness
• Losing weight without trying
• Bone pain
• Headache
CAN LUNG CANCER BE
TREATED
SUCCESSFULLY?
• As with many other causes,a key to survive lung
cancer is catching it in its earliest stages, when it is
most treatable.For patients who have small,early -
stage lung cancer, the cure rate can be as high as
80% to 90%.However,higher stage cancer isn't
usually curable but treatment may improve overall
survival and quality of life
There's no sure way to prevent lung cancer, but you can
reduce your risk if you:
• Don't smoke.
• Stop smoking.
• Avoid secondhand smoke.
• Test your home for radon.
• Avoid carcinogens at work.
• Eat a diet full of fruits and vegetables.
• Exercise most days of the week.
