INTRODUCTION
• Butterfly valves are rotary motion valve that is used
to stop, regulate, and start fluid flow.
• used for control of  liquid, gas or particulate, viscous fluids
with a simple, storable and compact structure.
• Its opening and closing member is a disc-shaped butterfly
plate that rotates around its own axis in the valve body.
• When the valve is opened, the disc rotates (1/4 turn) to
allow the fluid to pass almost indefinitely.

INTRODUCTION
• The Butterfly valve is normally less than 90° from full opening to full
closing.
• Thus Butterfly valves are also classified as “quarter-turn” valves.
• well-suited for the handling of large flows of liquids or gases at relatively
low pressures and for handling of slurries or liquids with large amount of
suspended solids.
• For large sizes butterfly valves offer savings in weight ,space and cost over
other types of valves.
• Due to minimal number of moving parts, they have low maintenance.

BASIC PARTS OF VALVE
The butterfly valve consists of only four
main components:
1) Body
2) Disk
3) Stem
4) Seat
5) Actuator

BODY
• It is also called as the shell, the framework that holds
everything together.
• They generally have bodies that fit between two pipe
flanges.
• The most common body designs are lug and wafer.
• The lug body has protruding lugs that provide bolt
holes matching those in the pipe flange.
• A wafer body does not have protruding lugs.

STEM
• Is one-piece shaft or a two-piece (split-
stem) design attached with the disc.
• The stem in most resilient seated designs is
protected from the media..
• The disc and shaft is designed such to
withstand the maximum pressure
differential across the valve.
• Any means of attachment between the
shaft and the disc shall be such as to
preclude components becoming loose in
service. Fig. Basic parts of valve

DISC
• The flow closure member of a butterfly valve is the
disc.
• Many variations of the disc design have evolved
relative to the orientation of the disk and stem in an
attempt to improve flow, sealing and/or operating
torque.
• The disc is the equivalent of a plug in a plug valve,
gate in a gate valve or a ball in a ball valve.
• It provides the capability for allowing and stopping
fluid flow.
• The disc is a pressure-retaining part.
Fig. Disc
• Typically forged to provide good wear
characteristics.

SEAT

• Resilient-seat butterfly valve forms an

interference fit between the disc edge and
the seat.
• The seat may be bonded to the body or it
may be pressed or locked in.
• The material of the seat can be made from
many different elastomers or polymers.
• Metal seats are also offered in high-
performance butterfly valves.

ACTUATOR
• Actuator basically operates the stem and disc
assembly.
• Valves shall be capable of being operated at a
differential pressure across the disc.
• Lever, worm gear travelling nut type or any other
suitable type of operator can be used.
• Actuator/Operator is of different types based on
manually operated and automatically operated.

MANUAL OPERATOR
• Closed by turning hand wheel or lever in a clockwise
direction when facing the hand wheel or lever.
• The design of lever when fitted is such that the lever
may only be assembled to the valve so that it is
parallel to the direction of flow when the valve is
open.
• All gear travelling nut operators is provided with
suitable stops to prevent movement of the shaft
beyond the limit corresponding to the fully closed
position of the disc.

MANUAL OPERATOR
• All gear/travelling nut operators shall be packed
with grease for life time operation.
• The operator shall be provided with arrangement
to indicate the disc position.

ELECTRIC OPERATOR

• Electric-operated butterfly valves needs electricity

to operate.
• One of the most reliable solutions for large plants
and applications.
• Electric motor drives are equipped with limit
switches and torque switches.
• Gears which are in direct association with electric
motor drive is totally enclosed and operated in
the presence of lubricant.
• Electric operator is always provided with an
auxiliary hand wheel for manual operation. Fig. Electric Operator

HYDRAULIC OPERATOR

• Hydraulic actuators work by sensing the fluid

pressure to initiate valve movement.
• These types of valves are used for applications
that receive huge amounts of force.
• Fluid pressure acts on a piston cylinder to convert
it into linear motion.
• This piston is connected to an actuator that
converts linear motion to rotary movement.
• Its torque initiates the movement of the butterfly Fig. Hydraulic Operator

valve stem.

PNEUMATIC OPERATOR

• Pneumatic actuators are powered by air or gas.

• A certain pressure range is set in the cylinder.
• When the system detects that its about to
exceed the air pressure, a diaphragm modulates
the opening and closing amount of the butterfly
valve.

WAFER BUTTERFLY VALVE
•  The wafer body is placed between pipe flanges,
and the flange bolts surround the valve body.
• The pipe flanges are connected through long
bolts that cross the entire valve body.
• The sealing between the valve and pipe flanges is
accomplished by using a tightly fitted seal, such
as an O-ring, gasket, precision machined.

WAFER BUTTERFLY VALVE
This type of connection is designed for:
• sealing against bi-directional differential pressures
• to prevent backward flow in systems designed for
universal flow.

LUGGED BUTTERFLY VALVE
• The lug-style butterfly valve has threaded lugs
outside the valve body.
• Two sets of bolts connect pipe flanges to each
side of the bolt inserts without nuts.
• The lug-style butterfly valves, carry the weight
of the piping through the valve body.

on both sides of valve.
• The valve is connected to piping flanges through
bolts.
• The double flange butterfly valve body configuration
ensures precise installation in piping.

MAINTENANCE OF BUTTERFLY VALVE
• To take precaution against rusting and grease the butterfly valves should
be maintained well.

• At the gearbox, you can apply lithium based grease for its maintenance.
• clean all the parts of the valve easily by using any silicon-based
product/lubricant.
• Try rotating or cycling the butter valve once a month if it’s not used
regularly.
• Visually inspect the valve and around the valve for any signs of leakage.

being open to atmosphere.
• The duration of test shall be as per Table 2.
• There is no indication of leakage past the valve disc during test and valves
shall be drop tight.
