WHAT IS SCIENTIFIC
ATTITUDE?
The acquisition of scientific attitude is
one of the most important outcomes of
science.

It is an attitude which will tend to foster

scientific achievements.
4
SCIENTIFIC ATTITUDES

Curiosity Objectivity Rationality

Skepticism Intellectual Honesty

Open-mindedness Perseverance
5
Situation 1
Kalix is doing an experiment. But after so many
trials, his experiment is really not acceptable.
Everything he did was a mistake but he really
wanted to get high grades. So, he covered up the
mistakes. Instead of telling the truth, he
manipulated the data and falsified all the results.
What scientific attitude he should have shown?
6
7
Intellectual Honesty

8
Situation 2
While playing by the shore, Elyse saw some big
crabs crawling on the sand. She wondered where
they came from , so she went further down the
shore to investigate their source.

9
10
Curiosity

11
WHAT IS THE
DIFFERENCE
BETWEEN
CURIOSITY AND
INTELLECTUAL
HONESTY? 12
Curiosity
is an attitude that makes you curious about the
various things around you.

An individual’s curiosity wants to know what it is all

about, what it is for, how it is done, how it works
and something else. You are looking for the answers
to the issues you want to learn. 13
Intellectual Honesty
is an attitude in which one should be truthful like
respecting the information sources.

It is an applied problem-solving method characterized by

an unbiased and honest attitude. The pursuit of truth does
not interfere with one’s personal faith. References are
acknowledged and plagiarism should be avoided.
14
Open-mindedness
is an attitude where scientist listens to others’
thoughts and values them.

He accepts criticisms and changes his mind.

15
Skepticism
is based upon evidence-based logic and
standards.

16
Situation 3
Yanna is an online seller of not-so-famous whitening products and
vitamins. She posted the products online to attract buyers. The post tells
that the products are effective in whitening, and in achieving glowing
and fair skin. Two buyers were interested.
Buyer 1: Miss Yanna, this is my first time to buy this products and I’m
really desperate to achieve glowing and white skin. Let me order 3
boxes of your whitening products and 3 bottles of vitamins
Buyer 2: I am interested in your products but can I first see the result?
Can you send some pictures of before and after of the customers who
tried this? I want to read the reviews. And please send me what are the
chemical components of your products as well as the vitamins. 17
Situation 3
Based on the situation, who possesses the
attitude of being skeptical? Why?

18
19
Situation 3

BUYER 2
Because of her questioning attitude.
She is not easily convinced.
Unlike Buyer 1, Buyer 2 asked so many questions and
evidences regarding the product that will prove its
effectiveness.
20
Situation 4
Clyden’s group is doing an experiment. Before they start performing the
experiment, Clyden asks his groupmates if it is better if they will discuss
first the things they need to do before they continue so that everything
will go smoothly. Clyden and Samantha are assigned to be the leaders of
the team, one of their groupmates, raised her hand to suggest something
for the experiment. Clyden accepted it and listed it on his notes.
However, Sam disregarded her opinion and told her that it will just be a
waste of time. Clyden listens, too, and respects the ideas of others. He
accepts criticisms and changes his mind if reliable evidence contradicts
his believes. While Sam is the opposite one. What she only accepts is
her opinion
21
Situation 4
Based on the situation, who is more open-
minded? Clyden or Sam?

22
23
Situation 3

CLYDEN
Because of he accepts opinions and ideas of others.
She is not easily convinced.
Unlike Buyer 1, Buyer 2 asked so many questions and
evidences regarding the product that will prove its
effectiveness.
24
Skepticism
is where a scientist doubts, questions,
and reconsiders conclusions.
The skeptical attitude pervades science
and is also applied to scientific assertions.
25
Open-mindedness
is an attitude in which an individual does not
reject any knowledge that is in conflict with his
or her idea

26
Objectivity
is where a scientist is objective unless he
allows his feelings and biases to influence his
recording of observations, interpretation of
data, and formulation of conclusions
It is where judgment is based on observable
phenomena and not influenced by emotions.
27
Perseverance
is not going to give up

It is a continued effort to do or achieve

something despite difficulties, failure or
opposition.
28
Rationality
is the attitude of an individual who believes
that things happen with a cause

29
Situation 5
Science Fair is becoming closer and closer. The group of Luna is one of
the contestants for Science Investigatory Project. Their research is
entitled “Ethanol out of Aratilis (Muntingia calaburo) Fruit. They
decided to conduct the experiment right away. The supposed to be 5-day
fermentation of aratilis extract was done in just 2 days because they
were running out of time and they really need to gather the data. They
proceed with the distillation process and all. They have used 3 bottles of
denatured alcohol yet they only produced 20mL of ethanol. When they
tried to light the ethanol to test its flammability, it flamed but in just a
matter of seconds. They were disappointed with the end result of
what they did. 30
Situation 5
Sevi told his groupmates to start over again and strictly follow the procedure.
Sevi still recorded the data and observations based on the experiment they did.
He tends to interpret these data prior to the actual observations and
experimentation that was made as well as verifies the observation’s
consistency. However, Hiro told his groupmates that they did nothing wrong.
He said that maybe the reason behind the failure is because of the black cat
that she he encountered earlier before they started. He believes that the black
cat is a bad premonition. Sevi laughed at him and told him that the black cat
has nothing to do with them. While Lune suggested that in doing research , one
must be patient and works hard without complains. They should have the effort
to do something an keep doing it till the end, even if it’s hard. Then they
started again and again. At the end, they succeed with their research. 31
Situation 3

Sevi: has the attitude of being objective

Luna: shows perserverance
Hiro: is not rational for the reason that he
believed that the reason why they failed is because of
the bad omen he encountered
32
“ In order to be
successful in doing
research, one must
possess these
scientific attitudes.
33
What are the
scientific attitudes
that we discussed?
