Barriers of Communication

● Barriers of communication are the difficulties involved


in the process of communication which distort the
message being properly understand by the receiver.
● “Barriers prevent the communication from being
effective”
● Barriers in communication lead to misunderstanding of
message among sender and the receiver. It becomes
difficult to interpret the message correctly leading to a
complete failure of communication due to these barriers.
Semantic Barrier 
• refers to the misunderstanding between the sender and
receiver arising due to the different meanings of words,
and other symbols used in the communication.

For example, the word “crane” has different meaning as shown in the
sentence below:

• The bird sanctuary is full of cranes.


• The builder used a crane to lift heavy steel rods.
• The girl has to crane her neck to watch the movie.
Example of Semantic Barrier

WHAT IS THAT?
Physical Barrier 
• is the environmental and natural condition that act as a barrier
in communication in sending message from sender to
receiver.
- includes the following various causes:

1. Environment – it includes wind, rain, thunder that creates a random noise that
cannot be stopped anyhow.
2. Time – shortage of time or sending a message in inappropriate time can be
significant cause of physical barriers.
3. Distance – one of the major causes of physical barriers.
4. Technical problems – an essential cause of physical barriers.
Physiological Barrier

• refers to the limitations of the human body and the human


mind (memory, attention, and perception). 
• Physiological barriers may result from individuals'
personal discomfort, caused by ill-health, poor eye sight,
or hearing difficulties.
Example of Physiological Barrier
Psychological Barrier 
• refers to the psychological state i.e. Opinions, attitudes,
status consciousness, emotions, etc. of a person that
deeply affects the ability to communicate.
- includes the following example:

1. Anger
2. Fear and Defensiveness
3. Attitudes and Values
4. Abstracting
5. Emotions
Emotional Barrier 

• refers to a lack of emotional awareness or control, often


referred to as emotional intelligence. By better understanding
our inner emotions, we  can communicate more productively
with others in the workplace and our everyday lives.
