INTRODUCTION
Known as anti-egg white injury factor.
Formerly known as vitamin H and vitamin
B7
found that rats fed large amounts of egg-
white as their only protein source exhibited
neurological dysfunction, hair loss,
dermatitis, and eventually, death.
SOURCES
METABOLISM
Biotin is found as biocytin in many foods, readily
absorbed.
Taken up by liver and muscle.
Bacterial flora will provide adequate quantities
of biotin
Because it is also synthesised by intestinal flora,
excretion is 3-6 times greater than intake.
ACTIVE FORM
BIOCYTIN
Valeric acid chain binds with epsilon amino group
of lysine in enzyme
CO-ENZYME ACTIVITY
Essential for carboxylation reactions
ABC of carboxylation reactions
A – ATP
B - Biotin
C – CO2 and Carboxylase enzyme
ACETYL COA CARBOXYLASE
PYRUVATE CARBOXYLASE
Answer: D
