New Testament

Backdrop

“The fullness of time”

Before we get into the New
Testament
• Let’s look at the backdrop
Judah
• Kept on getting conquered
• Antiochus had desecrated the
Temple in 167 BC.
• In 165 B.C. the Temple was
purified again.
• And then…Pompey in 63 B.C.
(we’ll tell you about him)…entered
the Temple!!! Defiling it again.
In 63 B.C.
• The Romans, under Pompey,
conquered Judea making it a
“client Kingdom” of Rome.
• (They took over and make their
government a puppet
government.)
Rome
Herod the Great
• The puppet king from 44 B.C. to about
0 A.D.
• Was pretty self important for a puppet
• He was obsessed with power…killed
his own sons…jockeyed for Roman
approval…build lots of stuff so people
would like him…sold out where ever
possible…and killed anyone who
opposed him.
Mark Ant and Doc. Occ
• In 31 B.C. The Eastern and Western
Rulers…Mark Antony and Octavian
fought for sole control of the emperor.
• Herod supported Mark Antony, but M.A.
lost…he then weaseled approval from
Doc Occ (Octavius) who would then be
known as the first sole Emperor.
• Caesar Augustus.
Under the peace of
Augustus, Herod
• Built a whole bunch of stuff.
• A new palace
• A market
• A Theater
• An Amphitheater
• And yes….oh yes…you guessed it
A Temple
Think there were some problems
with Herod’s temple?
Like WHY he built it?
Like something was
missing…
Can you guess what???
Yup
There were different parties
within Judiasm
Not that kind of party

oh…sorry
Sadducees
• Priestly group associated with temple
worship (Came from Solomon’s Zadok)
• They were wealthy and powerful
• They denied the immortality of the
soul…
• And therefore…
• The resurrection.
• They denied everything but the TORAH
also.
Pharisees
• Who were actually a reform party…
• Their name means “explainers”
• They wanted to live the Torah in
everyday life and to observe the whole
law.
• But they were wrapped up in externals
and rules…kind of OCD.
• They did believe in the resurrection
though…that was good.
Then you got your Essenes
• Their name means “The holy”
• These guys were apolitical and
separated themselves from Jewish
society.
• Q’mron was a community of Essenes.
• They were sketched out by the Temple
and thought that they would be defiled
by temple worship.
• They were big on the Messianic
Banquet and awaited the Bar Enesh
(Son of Man)
• They regarded all as equal and
opposed slavery.
• They often avoided marriage.
• They were quite interesting
• Some suggest that John the
Baptist was one of them.
Were the Jews waiting for a
Messiah?
• Yes!
• Just a political Messiah?
• Some…but others…like the
Essenes…knew that more was in
store.
• Sometimes you hear that they
were all just waiting for a political
messiah… Some were, but others
Many, especially the
Essenes
• Knew that more was to come.
• They wanted a Messiah to: deliver
them, release them and all the
Gentiles from sin, slavery, and
death, to gather all into a new
promised land, and to build a new
Temple and a New Jerusalem.
• (Isaiah 11:1, 25:6-8, and 66)

The CCC on the New
Testament
• CCC 124…The Word of God is set forth
in a most wonderful way in the writings
of the New Testament (quoting DV 17)
which hand on THE ULTIMATE TRUTH
of God’s revelation.
• The central object is JESUS CHRIST.
• His acts, teachings, Passion, and
glorification.
• PLUS…the birth and beginning of the
Church under the guidance of the Holy
Spirit.
Gospels
• Are the heart of all Scripture…
because they are the main source
for the life and teachings of The
Word incarnate, our savior.
( CCC125)
Three Stages of Gospel
Formation
•Life and teaching of
Jesus
•Oral tradition
•Written Gospels
4444

4
Connect Four
• There are four on Purpose and the
Church venerates all four. (CCC
127)
• Each was written to a different
audience and emphasizes a
different aspect of Christ’s life,
but all four together make a
complete picture.
