oh…sorry
Sadducees
• Priestly group associated with temple
worship (Came from Solomon’s Zadok)
• They were wealthy and powerful
• They denied the immortality of the
soul…
• And therefore…
• The resurrection.
• They denied everything but the TORAH
also.
Pharisees
• Who were actually a reform party…
• Their name means “explainers”
• They wanted to live the Torah in
everyday life and to observe the whole
law.
• But they were wrapped up in externals
and rules…kind of OCD.
• They did believe in the resurrection
though…that was good.
Then you got your Essenes
• Their name means “The holy”
• These guys were apolitical and
separated themselves from Jewish
society.
• Q’mron was a community of Essenes.
• They were sketched out by the Temple
and thought that they would be defiled
by temple worship.
• They were big on the Messianic
Banquet and awaited the Bar Enesh
(Son of Man)
• They regarded all as equal and
opposed slavery.
• They often avoided marriage.
• They were quite interesting
• Some suggest that John the
Baptist was one of them.
Were the Jews waiting for a
Messiah?
• Yes!
• Just a political Messiah?
• Some…but others…like the
Essenes…knew that more was in
store.
• Sometimes you hear that they
were all just waiting for a political
messiah… Some were, but others
Many, especially the
Essenes
• Knew that more was to come.
• They wanted a Messiah to: deliver
them, release them and all the
Gentiles from sin, slavery, and
death, to gather all into a new
promised land, and to build a new
Temple and a New Jerusalem.
• (Isaiah 11:1, 25:6-8, and 66)

for the life and teachings of The
Word incarnate, our savior.

Connect Four
• There are four on Purpose and the
Church venerates all four. (CCC
127)
• Each was written to a different
audience and emphasizes a
different aspect of Christ’s life,
but all four together make a
complete picture.
