Start is the act of
starting in
swimming
Swimming competitions began in Europe around 1800. Most swimmers swam using the breaststroke. In 1873, John Arthur Trudgen intro
trudgen style in swimming competitions after imitating the freestyle swimming of Indian tribes. As a result of the British people's dislike of
swimming movements that splash water here and there, Trudgen replaced the freestyle leg movements that whip up and down into sciss
movements like sidestroke swimming.
Swimming has been a sport that has been contested since the 1896 Athens Olympics. Women's swimming has been contested since the
Stockholm Olympics. In 1902, Richard Cavill introduced freestyle swimming. The International Swimming Federation was formed in 1908
butterfly stroke was first developed in the 1930s. Initially, the butterfly stroke was a variation of the breaststroke before being considered
separate swimming style in 1952.
02 -Facilities and equipment
Swimming Pool
The length of the long track swimming pool is 50 m while the short track is 25 m. In the International
Swimming Federation specifications for Olympic size pools, the pool length is 50 m and the pool width is
25 m. The minimum pool depth is 1.35 meters, starting from the first 1.0 m of the track to at least 6.0 m
calculated from the pool wall equipped with a starting block. The minimum depth in other sections is 1.0
m.

Swimming Track
The track width is at least 2.5 m with a distance of at least 0.2 m outside the first track and the last track
Each track is separated by a track rope that is the same length as the track length.
The track rope consists of a series of small buoys on a rope whose length is the same as the length of
the track. The buoys on the track rope can spin around when hit by water waves. Track ropes are
differentiated by color: green for tracks 1 and 8, blue for tracks 2, 3, 6, and 7, and yellow for tracks 4 and
5.
02 -Facilities and equipment
At each starting block there is a loudspeaker to sound the starting gun shot and a time measuring sensor that starts
recording the time when the swimmer jumps from the starting block.
The height of the starting block is between 0.5 m to 0.75 from the water surface. The size of the starting block is 0.5 x
0.5 m, and on top it is coated with anti-slip material. The slope of the starting block does not exceed 10°
03 - Competition rules in swimming
In the butterfly, breaststroke and freestyle swimming events, swimmers take the starting position on the starting beam. The bo
bent towards the water with the knees slightly bent.
In the backstroke event, the starting position is in the water with the body facing the pool wall. Both hands hold the iron handle
starting block, while the feet rest on the pool wall, and both knees are bent between the arms. The backstroke starting position
used by the first swimmer in the medley relay.
The starting referee calls the swimmers with a long blast of the whistle to climb onto the starting beam (get ready in the water
backstroke and medley relay). The swimmer is in the starting position after the Ready signal (Take your marks in English) is s
by the starting referee. The start will be declared invalid if the swimmer jumps from the starting block before the signal is given
the starting gun is fired, the swimmer's body must remain still.
