Glasses in Construction

Glass Def:

A hard, brittle substance, typically transparent or translucent, made by fusing

sand with soda and lime and cooling rapidly. It is used to make
windows,Buildings,Floors,Roofs,Interior,Furniture………….
Chemical Compositions
Glasses are made from three main materials—sand (silicon dioxide, or SiO2), limestone (calcium carbonate, or
CaCO3), and sodium carbonate (Na2CO3).
Float Glass
Float glass is a versatile and widely used type of glass in construction. Its smooth
surface and excellent transparency make it ideal for windows and facades.
Common Or White

it is without the mixtures of other chemical composition like all other glasses
Laminated Glass
Laminated glass consists of two or more layers of glass with an interlayer of
polyvinyl butyral (PVB) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA). It provides enhanced
safety, as the interlayer holds the glass together when shattered.
Annealed Glass
Annealed glass is the most common form of glass. It is heat-treated to relieve internal stresses, making it easier to
cut and shape. However, it is more prone to breakage than tempered or laminated glass.
Toughened Glass
Toughened glass, also known as tempered glass, is produced by subjecting
annealed glass to a heating and cooling process. It is up to 5 times stronger than
annealed glass and shatters into small, relatively harmless fragments when
broken.
Mirror
Mirrors are essential in construction for functional and decorative purposes. They
reflect light, create an illusion of space, and add aesthetic appeal to interiors.
Wired Glass
Wired glass is a fire-resistant glass that contains an embedded wire mesh. It
provides fire protection and integrity, making it suitable for areas where fire
safety is critical.
Tinted Glass
Tinted glass has a colored film or coating that reduces the amount of heat and
glare from sunlight. It enhances privacy, reduces energy consumption, and adds a
stylish touch to architectural designs.
Patterned Glass
Patterned glass is textured or embossed with various designs, adding visual
interest, privacy, and diffusion of light. It is often used in windows, partitions,
and decorative elements.
Float Glass:
Float glass is a versatile and widely used material in the construction industry. It offers various benefits such as
excellent transparency, smooth surface, and uniform thickness.

Usage:

Float glass finds its application in windows, doors, facades, and interior partitions.

Composition:

Float glass is composed of silica sand, soda ash, limestone, and other additives.

Pakistan Rates:

The cost of float glass in Pakistan varies based on size, ranging from small residential windows to large commercial
panels,like of of 3mm is 106 per sq.ft to 12mm is 450 per sq ft…
Environmental Benefits:

Float glass promotes energy efficiency by allowing natural light penetration, reducing the need for artificial
lighting.

Types in Construction:

Float glass comes in various types like clear, tinted, reflective, and low-e glass, each serving specific purposes in
construction projects.

Techniques:

Installation techniques for float glass include glazing, curtain wall systems, and structural glazing.
Techniques Used for Float Glass

1 Structural Glazing

Structural glazing involves attaching glass units to the building's structure using adhesives,
creating a seamless and aesthetically pleasing appearance.

2 Curtain Wall System

A curtain wall system is a non-structural exterior wall system that uses lightweight glass panels
and metal frames to enclose a building, providing thermal insulation and aesthetic appeal.

3 Point-Supported Glass System

This system consists of glass panels supported by point-fixings, such as metal bolts or brackets,
creating a frameless and transparent effect.
