WAYS ON

ELUCIDATING
CONCEPT
CONCEPT PAPER

• aims to clarify a concept which can be about any topic from

any fields. It can also be short summary that tells the reader
what the project is, why it is important, and how it will be
carried out. Its aim is to capture the thoughts and ideas
while the research proposal captures the ideas in a structure
manner for approval to research.
THREE WAYS IN
ELUCIDATING A
CONCEPT
BEFORE WRITING A CONCEPT PAPER, YOU MUST FIRST LEARN
HOW TO EXPLAIN YOUR CONCEPT OF YOUR PROJECT OR
RESEARCH. BASICALLY, THERE ARE THREE WAYS OF
EXPLAINING A CONCEPT.
• 1. Definition – explaining the concept by answering, “What does it mean?” This
makes of an illustrations, examples, and description to clarify the term.
• It can be presented in three ways:
• a. Informal definition- is done through a parenthetical or brief explanation.

Example: Freedom, also referred to as liberty or independence, is a state people
reach when they are free to think and do whatever they please.
• b. Formal definition- explains a term by incorporating the term to be defined (species), the
general category of the term (genus), and the quality that makes the term different from other
terms in the same category. (Differentia).

Example: Term: Freedom
• Part of speech: noun
• Definition: The power or right to act, speak or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint

c. Extended definition- is a detailed way of defining a term and is usually composed of at least
one paragraph. This type of definition incorporates various patterns of development [e.g. formal
and informal definition, comparison and contrast, narration, description, classification, functional
analysis, process, analogy, and cause and effect] to explain a given concept.
• Example: To our colonial forefathers, freedom meant having a voice in their government. (historical reference) The
Revolutionary War was a last resort against an empire that continued to tax its colonist without the representation
of the colonist in Parliament. Since the United States won the right to rule itself, our country has been referred to as
“the land of the free and the home of the brave” (example) True freedom means the ability to think, feel, say or act
however one chooses. (listing parts) It is a state where the bars of bondage do not exist. (negation) Unfortunately,
the widening gap between the haves and have nots means that some are now shackled by their lack of education

• as defined for instance means to define
• for example is defined as such as to illustrate
• 2. Explication – is a method of explanation in which sentences, verses, quotes, or phrases
are taken from a literary or academic work then interpreted and explained in a detailed
way. You may begin by analyzing how the text was constructed and end with a concise
conclusion by restating your major arguments. Explication not only illuminates a piece of
literature, but also serves to remind the readers about its historical setting and formal
properties of style and language.
EXAMPLE:

• In the final stanza of his poem The Road Not Taken, Frost talks about his dilemma of
coming upon two diverging paths, and not knowing which one to choose. The third line is
very important, as it delivers an idea of choosing between the two divergent paths.

The tone in this stanza shifts from regretful to optimistic. The two roads symbolically
represent individual choices. The mood is neither depressed nor unhappy, but the poet sighs
because he knows what the complexities our life may have for him. Whether he has chosen
a right or a wrong path, it has a compelling impact on his life. The phrase “less traveled”
suggests the theme of individualism. From: The Road Not Taken (by Robert Frost
• 3. Clarification – it is a method of explanation in which the points are organized from a
general abstract idea to specific and concrete examples. The analysis of the concept is
done by looking at the examples and specifying its characteristics.

As an example in other words put another way to be specific
Consider the following example in particular specifically
To clarify for example in short stated differently
EXAMPLE:

• Noise is much more than just an annoyance. In fact, noise can be a type of pollution that
produces serious hearing impairments, prevents people from getting adequate rest,
contributes to high blood pressure, interferes with productivity, and reduces our overall
quality of life.
LET’S TRY!

• 1. Bullying is a verb that describes the act of forcing someone to do something he or she
doesn’t want to do. Typically, the bully uses physical power or influence to intimidate the
person being bullied.
• Bullying occurs when someone uses his or her power or prestige to intimidate and
terrorize another person. At times, the bully pushes someone around to get something
specific from that person, but at other times, the bully simply is mean just to watch the
other person squirm. Tormenting anyone for any reason is inappropriate and should not
be tolerated
• This poem, ”If” by Rudyard Kipling is a father’s attempt to provide his son with a
specific values to live by in life. “If” first appeared in Kipling’s collection “Rewards and
Fairies” in 1909. It is his effort to define a balance in life for his son, but it can be studied
and used by everyone. The poem can be viewed as a set of guidelines on how to live and
act with integrity and right values such that one becomes the ideal human. Each of the
four stanzas deals with different life situations and the best way to act during them.
• Justice is a broad concept which encompasses a wide set of idea, most of which also branch out into smaller
notions. For instance, it can refer to the sentencing of a criminal based on due process. When an individual
gets what he deserves, even outside the hands of the law, it is also considered justice in some contexts. This
may come in the form of vigilante justice, in which a person dissatisfied with the system doles out
punishment to wrong- doers. Poetic justice is also another related concept which is used in literature to show
how the good is always rewarded while bad forces always meet a grim end. In the context of this paper,
justice will be clearly delineated into any instance in which the law is successfully and fairly applied to an
individual, resulting in either an arrest or a release. To illustrate if a thief is a caught and tried in court
through due process, and is found to be guilty and then sentenced accordingly, it can be said that justice was
served. However, if the same thief is caught in the act by a band of villagers and was beaten right then and
there, it will be considered justice in the context of the paper, as the process has not undergone due process.
5. Dengue fever is a mosquito – borne tropical disease caused by the dengue virus.
