Science Quarter 1 – Living things

and their Environment

Module 3: Non-Mendelian
Inheritance
The module is divided into four lessons, namely:

• Lesson 1 – Location of Genes

• Lesson 2 – Incomplete Dominance
• Lesson 3 – Codominance
• Lesson 4 - Multiple Alleles
After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. Describe the location of genes in chromosomes

2. Explain the incomplete dominance pattern of
inheritance
3. Describe the codominance traits
4. Determine all possible combination of genes for a
specific blood type
Lesson 1: Gene Location
Key Terms:
DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) – is the cell’s genetic material, contained in chromosomes
within the cell nucleus and mitochondria.
CENTROMERE – area where the chromatids of a chromosome are attached.
KINETOCHORE – a specialized protein structure at the centromere region on assister
chromatid. Spindle microtubules attach to the kinetochore during mitosis
and meiosis.
TELOMERE – the natural end of a eukaryotic chromosome composed of a usually repetitive
DNA sequence and serving to stabilize the chromosome.
ALLELE – a variant form of a given gene.
LOCUS – (plural loci) the particular site/location where a gene is found on a chromosome.
KARYOTYPE - the number and visual appearance of the chromosomes in the cell nuclei of an
organism or species.
HOMOLOGOUS CHROMOSOMES - carry the same sequence of genes but not necessarily
the same alleles of those genes.
NUCLEOSOME - is a section of DNA that is wrapped around a core of proteins.
Always Remember these Vocabulary Words

Dominant Trait – The trait that is visible, and masked the recessive traits
Recessive Trait – are traits that are expressed if both recessive traits are
crossed. Masked by dominant trait
Genotype – refers to the internal genetic constitution. (e.g. AA, aa, Aa). Is
the part of the genetic makeup of a cell,
Phenotype – refers to the external or physical expression of a trait (e.g.
brown, tall, round)
Homozygous (AA, aa) - When an individual has two of the same alleles,
whether dominant or recessive, they are homozygous
Heterozygous (Aa)- pair of genes where one is dominant and one is
recessive.
Probability - The chance that a given event will occur.
Hint: Remember that blood type A and B
are codominant, while blood type O is
recessive.

The backbone of DNA molecule is

composed of alternation sugar and
phosphate groups.
An important property of DNA is that it can
replicate or make copies of itself. Each
strand of DNA in the double helix can serve
as a pattern for duplicating the sequence of
6 bases. This is critical when cells divide
because each new cell needs to have an
exact copy of the DNA present in the old
cell.
DNA is made up of millions of building
blocks called nucleotide, which contain
1 sugar (S)
1 phosphate (P)
1 nitrogenous base either (cytosine,
guanine, thymine or adenine (NB)
