• Conclusion
Introduction:
Punjab has one of the oldest and richest cultures of the world. Its diversity and
uniqueness is evident in the Punjabi poetry, philosophy, spirituality, education,
artistry, music, cuisine, science, technology, military warfare, architecture, traditions,
values and history.
Unique, colourful and extravagant, these are the attributes of the heartland of
India, Punjab. Popular and distinguished across the globe, the culture of Punjab is
indeed overwhelming.
Vir Singh
• Bhai Vir Singh (5 December 1872 – 10 June 1957) was an Indian poet, scholar,
and theologian of the Sikh revival movement, playing an important part in the
renewal of Punjabi literary tradition. Singh’s contributions were so important
and influential that he became canonized as Bhai, an honorific often given to
those who could be considered a saint of the Sikh faith.
• His identification with all the important concerns of modern Sikhism was so
complete that he came to be canonized as Bhai, the Brother of the Sikh Order,
very early in his career. For his pioneering work in its several different genres,
he is acknowledged as the creator of modern Punjabi literature.Born on 5
December 1872, in Amritsar, Bhai Vir Singh was the eldest of Dr Charan
Singh’s three sons. The family traces its ancestry back to Diwan Kaura Mall
Arora (d. 1752), who rose to the position of vice-governor of Multan, under
Nawab Mir Mu’ln ul-Mulk, With the title of Maharaja Bahadur. Bhai Vir Singh
was married at the age of 17 to Chatar Kaur, daughter of Sardar Narain Singh
of Amritsar.
A literary heritage

• To this patrimony of Bhai Vir Singh was added from his mother’s side a living kinship with another rich
tradition of scholarship in exegesis of the Ckiani school, going back to the times of Guru Gobind Singh.
His maternal grandfather Giani Hazara Singh compiled a lexicon of Guru Granth Sahib, and wrote a
commentary on Bhai Gurdas Varan.
• As a schoolboy, Bhai Vir Singh used to spend a great deal of his time in the company of Giani Hazara
Singh under whose guidance he not only learned the classical and neo-classical languages; Sanskrit, Persian
and Braj, but also received grounding, both theoretical and practical, in the science of Sikh exegesi.Bhai
Vir Singh was the child of an age in ferment. The extinction of Sikh sovereignty in the Punjab, the decline
in the fortunes of Sikh aristocracy, the gradual emergence of an urban middle class, the dissipation of the
“national intellectual life” of the Punjab owing to the neglect and decay of any indigenous education of the
local people aroused among the Sikhs a concern for the survival of Sikhi, any political destiny and a
concern for redefining the boundaries of their faith.
Amrita Pritam
• Pritam is best remembered for her poignant
poem, Ajj aakhaan Waris Shah nu (Today I
invoke Waris Shah – "Ode to Waris Shah"), an
elegy to the 18th-century Punjabi poet, and an
expression of her anguish over massacres during
the partition of India. As a novelist, her most
noted work was Pinjar ("The Skeleton", 1950), in
which she created her memorable character, Puro,
an epitome of violence against women, loss of
humanity and ultimate surrender to existential
fate; the novel was made into an award-winning
film, Pinjar (2003)
• Amrita was the first recipient of Punjab Rattan Award conferred upon her by Punjab Chief Minister Capt.
Amarinder Singh. She was the first female recipient of the Sahitya Akademi Award in 1956 for Sunehadey
(poetic diminutive of the Punjabi word "ਸੁਨੇਹੇ" (Sunehe), Messages), Amrita Pritam received the Bhartiya
Jnanpith Award, India's highest literary award, in 1982 for Kagaj te Canvas (Paper and Canvas). She received
the Padma Shri (1969) and Padma Vibhushan (2004), India's second highest civilian award, and Sahitya
Akademi Fellowship, India's highest literary award, also in 2004. She received D.Litt. honorary degrees, from
many universities including, Delhi University (1973), Jabalpur University (1973) and Vishwa Bharati (1987).
• She also received the international Vaptsarov Award from the Republic of Bulgaria (1979) and Degree of
Officer dens, Ordre des Arts et des Lettres (Officier) by the French Government (1987).She was nominated as
a member of Rajya Sabha 1986–92. Towards the end of her life, she was awarded by Pakistan's Punjabi
Academy, to which she had remarked, Bade dino baad mere Maike ko meri Yaad aayi.. (My motherland has
remembered me after a long time); and also Punjabi poets of Pakistan, sent her a chaddar, from the tombs of

The characters in Chetan's stories and short stories are the downtrodden and the innocent rural folk with suppressed desires and
passions. Tragedy and irony mark the main elements of her fiction. Complex inner duality of the female psyche is the chief theme
of Dalbir Chetan. One of his admirers remarked that his demise had recreated a vacuum in the literary circles. It was about
Chetan that Amrita Pritam said, "Dalbir Singh Chetan has such a power in his writings that his personified characters actually
stir up the sentiments of the reader.
