INTRODUCTION
Broiler production is a significant aspect of
the poultry industry, and improving growth and
performance is crucial for economic success.
Tryptophan is an essential amino acid that
plays a key role in growth and development.
This project aims to investigate the effect of
different levels of tryptophan in broiler diets on
growth performance and feed efficiency.
OBJECTIVE
• * To evaluate the growth performance of broiler
birds fed diets fortified with varying levels of
tryptophan.
• * To assess the impact of tryptophan
supplementation on feed conversion ratio (FCR)
and weight gain of broiler birds. The formula for
feed conversion ratio = feed intake / weight gain
JUSTIFICATION
Most feedstuffs are lacking in most of the
essential amino acids mostly espcially
tryptophan.
Tryptophan helps poultry increase their growth
performance through increasing appetite, feed
efficiency, and feed utilization. It helps poultry
synthesize protein for body demand.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
• * Experimental site: The study will be carried out at the
poultry unit of the teaching and research farm,
department of animal science. University of calabar,
calabar
• * Experimental animal and design: a total of 105 day
old broiler chicks will be weighed and randomly
assigned to 5 dietary treatments in a CRD with each
treatments having 21 birds and replicates of 7 birds.
The experiment will last for 56 days, individual birds
will be weighed at the commencement of the
experiment to obtain the intial weight of the birds.
Subsequently, weight data will be taken weekly for computation
of mean body weight of birds, feed consumption will be
measured by calculating the difference in the quantity of feed
offtered daily and the quantity left.

*. Experimental Diets: a standard broiler starter and finisher

diets will be formulated and fortified with tryptophan at 0.0,
0.10, 0.15, 0.20 and 0.25% to represent treatments 1,2,3,4,
and 5 respectively.

*. Statistical analysis: data that will be generated from the

experiment will be statiscally analyzed, using the analysis of
variance procedures. Significant means will be seperated by
Ducan new multiple range test as outlined by obi (1990).
