ILLUSTRATE

RECTANGULAR
COORDINATE SYSTEM,
LINEAR EQUATIONS
IN TWO VARIABLES
AND FIND A SLOPE OF
A LINE GIVEN TWO
POINTS
In this lesson, you will know how to:
1.Illustrate the rectangular coordinate system and its uses;
2.Illustrate linear equations in two variables; and

3.Find and illustrate the slope of a line given two points, equation, and graph s
Let's Recall

Directions: Solve the following problems.

1. 11 −8 5. 8 – (−11)
2. 8 – 11 6. −2−3 / 6−(−4)
3. −8 −11 7. −9+1 / −3−1
4. −8 – (−11) 8. 8−4 / 6−2

THE RECTANGULAR COORDINATE
SYSTEM IS ALSO CALLED THE ℜ^2 ,
XY-PLANE OR CARTESIAN PLANE IN
HONOR OF THE FRENCH
MATHEMATICIAN RENE DESCARTES
(1596-1650), WHO IS THE FATHER OF
MODERN MATHEMATICS.
The Rectangular Coordinate System is composed of two
perpendicular number lines that meet at the point of origin (0,0) and
divide the plane into four regions called quadrants (Quadrant I,
Quadrant II, Quadrant III, Quadrant IV). It is composed of infinitely
many points called ordered pair (𝒙,𝒚), where 𝑥 and 𝑦∈ ℜ. The first
coordinate of a point is called the 𝒙-coordinate or abscissa and the
second coordinate is called the 𝒚-coordinate or ordinate. We call
(𝑥,𝑦) because it is different from (𝑦,𝑥). The horizontal line is typically
called 𝒙-axis and vertical line as 𝒚-axis.

A LINEAR EQUATION IN TWO
VARIABLES IS AN EQUATION
THAT CAN BE WRITTEN IN
THE STANDARD FORM 𝐴𝑥 +
𝐵𝑦 = 𝐶 , WHERE 𝐴 , 𝐵 , AND 𝐶
ARE REAL NUMBERS AND 𝐴
AND 𝐵 ARE NOT BOTH ZERO.

1. 𝟒𝒙 = 𝟗 + 𝟐𝒚
SOLUTION:
THE GIVEN 4 𝑥 = 9 + 2 𝑦 IS A LINEAR
EQUATION IN TWO VARIABLE
TO REWRITE IN STANDARD FORM,
SUBTRACT BOTH SIDES BY 2 𝑦 4 𝑥 −2 𝑦 = 9 + 2 𝑦
−2𝑦
SIMPLIFY 4 𝑥 −2 𝑦 = 9
IDENTIFY 𝐴 , 𝐵 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 𝐴 = 4, 𝐵 = −2 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 = 9
2. 𝒚 = 𝟑𝒙 + 𝟕
Solution:

The given 𝑦 =3 𝑥 +7 is a linear equation in two variable

To rewrite in standard form,

Subtract both sides by 7 and 𝑦 𝑦 – 𝑦 −7 = 3 𝑥 + 7 −7 − 𝑦

Simplify −7 = 3 𝑥 − 𝑦

Since this is an equation, flip the equation 3 𝑥 − 𝑦 = −7

Identify 𝐴 , 𝐵 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 𝐴 = 3, 𝐵 = −1, 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝐶 = −7

3. 𝟐𝒙 ^ 𝟐 – 𝒚 = 𝟖
Solution:

This is not a linear equation because the exponent of 𝑥 is 2. The

exponents of the variables in a linear equation must be 1.

4. 𝟒 / 𝒙 + 𝒚 = 𝟕
Solution: This not linear equation because one of the variables appears in the denominator of a fraction.
5. 𝒙𝒚 = 𝟖
Solution: This is not a linear equation because the two variables are part of the same term. The two variables must not belong to one term; they are separated by addition or subtraction.
