CEREBELLUM

DR MINU LIZ ABRAHAM

NEURAL CIRCUITS AND NEURONAL ACTIVITY IN
CEREBELLUM

 Deep cerebellar nuclei receive excitatory inputs via

Climbing fibers, Mossy fibers

 Deep cerebellar nuclei sends excitatory impulses to

Brainstem and thalamus .

 However Purkinje cells output is inhibitory to Deep

cerebellar nuclei

 Neuronal activity in cerebellar cortex plays a important role

in modulating excitatory signals

A. Deep cerebellar –Thalamus – Cerebral cortex – Spinal

cord
NEURONAL ACTIVITY OF INTRINSIC CEREBELLAR CIRCUIT

 Excitatory input from climbing fibers or mossy fibers sets up following activity
in the cerebellar circuit

A. FEEDFORWARD INHIBITION OF PURKINJE CELLS

B. FEEDFORWARD INHIBITION OF GRANULE CELLS

C. FEEDBACK INHIBITION OF GRANULE CELLS

• Since Granule cell and golgi cell are excited by

same excitatory input ( mossy fibres ) , this
arrangement is called feedforward inhibition

CONNECTIONS OF
CEREBELLUM

 Cerebellum receives afferents and

sends efferents through 3 cerebellar
peduncles

I. Inferior cerebellar peduncle

II. Middle cerebellar peduncle

III. Superior cerebellar peduncle

AFFERENT CONNECTIONS
I. FROM CEREBRAL CORTEX

 Cortico – ponto - cerebellar tract : Arises in Motor cortex and ends in pontine nuclei.
From pontine nuclei the pontocerebellar fibers cross to opposite side through middle
cerebellar peduncle. This tract conveys information to spinocerebellum from cerebral
cortex.

II. FROM SPINAL CORD

 Ventral spinocerebellar tract : Conveys Proprioceptive impulses from different parts of

body of opposite side

 Dorsal spinocerebellar tract : Conveys Proprioceptive impulses from different parts of

III. FROM CUNEATE NUCLEUS
 Cuneo-cerebellar tract : Conveys Proprioceptive impulses from head , neck and upper limb

IV. FROM VESTIBULAR APPARATUS

 Vestibulocerebellar fibers :Information regarding position and movement of head

V. FROM RED NUCLEUS AND TECTUM

 Rubrocerebellar and Tectocerebellar tracts : Carries visual impulses from superior colliculi and
auditory impulses from inferior colliculi

VI. FROM INFERIOR OLIVARY NUCLEI

 Olivocerebellar tract : Arises from olivary nucleus and enters the cerebellum via inferior cerebellar
peduncle to innervate all parts of cerebellar cortex and deep cerebellar nuclei via climbing fibers.

 Conveys proprioceptive impulses from different parts of body

[ CEREBELLAR EFFERENT FIBERS ]

 Purkinje cell axons pass to deep cerebellar nuclei

 Influence on these nuclei – INHIBITORY [ Release of GABA ]
