MEDICAL IMAGING
In Medical Imaging we will talk more on
the following issues;
• Meaning of Medical imaging
• Types of medical imaging equipments
• The roles of Medical imaging in medical field
• The roles of a Biomedical Engineer in medical
Imaging and,
• Precautions to be taken when using Medical
imaging equipments at hospitals
What is Medical Imaging?
Medical imaging is an interdisciplinary field involving
machine learning, computer vision, image science
(radiology, biomedical), and image processing. Widely
used medical imaging techniques include X-ray radiation,
computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance
imaging (MRI).

.Medical Imaging technology gives different information

about the area of the body being studied or treated
related to the possible diseases to bring the
effectiveness of medical treatment.
TYPES OF MEDICAL IMAGING
EQUIPMENTS
There are several types of equipments used in Hospitals
for medical imaging process, Those equipments include
the following;
• X-Ray Machine
• Computed Tomography( CT scan )
• Ultrasound Machine
• Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI )
• Tactile Imaging
• Endoscopy
1.X-RAY MACHINE
• The generation of X-rays occurs when electrons are
accelerated under a potential difference and turned into
electromagnetic radiation.
• The X-ray machine is used at Hospitals for viewing bone
fractures, bone dislocations, and dental issues.

• An X-ray machine
2.COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHY (CT SCAN)
• This is a medical imaging device which utilizes many X-rays
from multiple angles to create cross sectional images of
internal organs of human body.
• It is used to give detailed imaging of cross sectional images of
internal structures like brain, abdomen, blood vessels and
chest.

• a CT Scan Machine
3.ULTRASOUND MACHINE
• This is a non-invasive imaging equipment that shows
structures inside the body using high-intensity sound waves.
• Ultrasound machine is used for the purposes like studying of
fetus development during pregnancy, abdominal diagnosis
and find genital and prostate problems.

4.MAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI)
• This is one of the Medical Imaging device which utilizes strong
magnetic fields and radio waves to generate the more detailed
images of organs and tissues.
• The distinguishing reason between MRI and CT scan is that MRI
machine gives more detailed and clear image of organs and soft
tissues.
• MRI is particularly effective for viewing soft tissues like connective
tissues, neurological conditions ,brain and spinal cord diagnosis,
and musculoskeletal issues.
• NB:
CT, radiography, and fluoroscopy all work on the same
basic principle: an X-ray beam is passed through the
body where a portion of the X-rays are either absorbed
or scattered by the internal structures, and the
remaining X-ray pattern is transmitted to a detector
(e.g., film or a computer screen) for recording or
further processing by a computer.
5.TACTILE IMAGING MACHINE
• A Tactile Machine is a medical imaging machine which
operate when receives a sense of touch from the human.
• It creates an image after receiving a sense of touch.
Forexample, when diagnosing fractures on a palm of hand,
tactile machine is used.
6. ENDOSCOPY MACHINE
• This is another medical Imaging device which does not use
any Rays to view the internal organs of human body.
• It is placed inside the body eg,through the throat then it gives
an image of the area to be diagnosed.
• It is most used for viewing small fractures and abdomalitiea
like entrance of unnecesarry object like coin.

THE ROLES OF MEDICAL IMAGING IN MEDICAL FIELD.
The Medical Imaging have a great role in medical field as follows;

• It allows Doctors to better assess patients`organs, tissues and

blood vessels through non invasive means

• It helps to determine whether surgery would be an effective

treatment option at that time.

• It directs Doctors to deal with various issues like blood clots,

joint displacement and treatment of fractures.

• Also it assist Medical personnel like Doctors on the

procedures involving the placement of assisting devices in the
body like hearing assisting devices.
THE ROLE OF BIOMEDICAL ENGINEER IN MEDICAL
IMAGING FIELD
• A Biomedical engineer is responsible for repairing and
maintenancing all Imaging equipments at hospitals like CT
scans if required at any time.
• A Biomedical engineer is responsible for regular checking of
all imaging equipments so that they couldn`t harm a patience
in case of rays exposure.
• A Biomedical engineer is required to give a understandable
education to the medical personnels on how to use and clean
those devices.
• Also a Biomedical engineer is responsible for checking if the
devices`manufacturer is suitable for diagnosing the patients in
order to minimize the effects to the people.
PRECAUTIONS TO BE TAKEN WHEN USING THESE
MEDICAL IMAGING DEVICES
• Before using the devices, a Medical personnel should wear
the protective equipment (eg leaded aprons, gloves and
googles) to avoid accidentally high exposure of rays.

• Use the correct device for its only authorized use to minimize
the effects to the patient.

• Be at distant from the beam of rays so that to prevent the

effects which could be caused by UV rays from the imaging
medical device.
In Conclussion;
• Medical Imaging is an important field since it
helps both Doctors and Biomedical engineers
to develop their skills(diagnosis,therapy and
equipments maintenance) so as to bring the
major evolution in science and technology
especially in Medical field.
