A POSITION PAPER
P O I
NTIt refers to an essay that expresses a
position on an issue. It gives
arguments that support the opinion of
the writer based on the facts
collected.
Topic: Vaping or E-cigarettes

Thesis Statement: People should not be allowed

to consume vape or e-cigarettes because it can
cause harm to their health. (opinion about an issue +
reason why you believe that opinion)

Fact: Vape or e-cigarettes contain a chemical called

“Nicotine” that is highly addictive and can harm
adolescent brain development.
Opinion: People should not consume any amount of vape
or e-cigarette. Mention the
source of fact
Argument: According to the Centers for Disease
Control and Prevention, vaping or e-cigarette
contains a chemical called Nicotine, a
substance that is highly addictive and can
harm the brain development of adolescents.
Therefore, people should not consume any
amount of vape or e-cigarette.
Topic: Abortion

Thesis Statement: In order to avoid teenage pregnancy which

may lead to an increased rate of abortion, the education
system should include Sex Education in the curriculum of
elementary and high school and expose these learners to the
use of contraception.

Fact: In the Philippines, the unintended pregnancy rate declined 33%

between 1990–1994 and 2015–2019. During the same period, the
abortion rate increased 51%. The share of unintended pregnancies
ending in abortion rose from 22% to 51%.
Opinion: The education system should include Sex Education
in the curriculum of elementary and high school and expose
these learners to the use of contraception.

Argument: Based on the study conducted by the Guttmacher Institute,

unintended pregnancy decreased to 33% during 1990-1994 and 2015-2019
while an increased rate from 22% to 51% of abortions happened in the same
period. Notably, the education system should include Sex Education in the
curriculum of elementary and high school and expose these learners to the use
of contraception in order to avoid teenage pregnancy that later on may lead to
the increasing rate of abortion among teenagers.

CONSIDERATIONS IN
DEFENDING AN ISSUE
Clearly identify the issue that
you believe is affecting you
and your community. You
ONLY have to choose ONE
issue.
From the issues that you
identified, take on a side that
you can defend.
Given the issues that you
chose, identify other concepts
or ideas that you can associate
with the issues.
Formulate statements that will express your
stand on the issues. Thesis statements may
convey the message that the issues are
having negative effects on people and the
community.
Gather factual evidence to support your
arguments regarding the issue. This
evidence may be taken from official
statement of the government agencies,
political leaders and academic authorities.
Make sure that your statements are
strong enough to convince or
persuade your readers into action to
address the issue.
