The Particle Model

The following answers are given by students
to exam questions. Can you correct them?

Q: Describe the behviour of particles.

All matter is made up of particles and these particles can undergo chemical changes. As water
changes from liquid to ice it undergoes sublimation in a chemical change. In the same way. Gases
can immediately precipitate to form ice in the process of freezing.

Q: A metal block has a length of 10cm , a width of 5cm, a height of 6cm. It has a mass of 3600g.
Find the density.

V = 10+5+6
V = 21cm

Density = volume/mass
Density = 21/3600
Density = 0.0058 g/cm^3
• Q: Describe the behviour of particles.
• All matter is made up of particles and these particles can
undergo physical changes. As water changes from liquid to ice
it undergoes freezing in a physical change. In the same way.
Gases can immediately condense to form ice in the process of
deposition.

• Q: A metal block has a length of 10cm , a width of 5cm, a

height of 6cm. It has a mass of 3600g. Find the density.
Corrections
• V = 10x5x6
• V = 300cm^3

• Density = mass/volume
• Density = 3600/300
• Density = 12 g/cm^3
Draw the three states of matter and describe the properties
Why do we study the
particle model

• The particle model gives

us insight into the
behaviour of particles in
different states of
matter.
• It provides a model of
the particles in matter.

Why are we recapping in reactions as we explore the different topics in
chemistry.
the particle model? When we study chemical reactions; we will learn that
there needs to be a driver of those reactions, something
to speed it up. This is where heat comes in.

From the particle model we know that heat causes the

kinetic energy of particles to increase.

As the particles move more; they collide with

each other increasing the reaction rate.

• Read through page 73 and answer questions 1-4.

Answers
1. In a physical change the appearance or form of the matter changes
but the kind of matter in the substance does not. In a chemical
change the atoms rearrange themselves to form a new substance.
New bonds are formed. A physical change is not permanent.
2. Debris could hit spectators; buildings can be left unstable if not
collapsed completely; if there are some undetonated explosives left
in it, it is dangerous for workers to make it safe.
3. Heat increases the kinetic energy of particles causing them to
collide more frequently; increasing pressure.
4. Increase amount of gas, decrease volume, increase temperature.

What is a physical change?
• Something that changes the physical properties of an object, such as
its size, form or shape.
• E.g. State change
• A physical change is a reversible change.
A chemical change is also known as a chemical reaction is a change
in which atoms are rearranged to create new substances.

Reactants → Products

+ →

In a chemical reaction, reactants turn into products. A

chemical reaction is an irreversible change.
An example of a chemical reaction is making a cake
• The ingredients are the reactants
• The cake is the one of the products

Flour + sugar + butter + eggs  gas + cake
