Commercial sex workers

Definition

• Sex workers are adults who receive money or goods in exchange for

sexual services, either regularly occasionally. A sex worker can be

male, female or transgender. R.P.Saxena

Magnitude of the problem
• In India close to three million women work as prostitutes, of which
1.2 million are below 18.
• Increasing STD (sexually transmitted diseases) and health related
problems due to prostitution.
• India has an HIV/AIDS population of approximately 1.4- 1.6 million
people making it the world's third-largest population suffering from
HIV/AIDS & Asia's largest sex industry centre.
• Increase in the rate of child trafficking over the years.

5. Widows and divorcees
6. Prestigious life
7. Over sexual desires
8. Indebtedness

Types of sex workers

1. Formal sex workers : establishment based and mangers and/ or

pimps act as clearly defined authorities and as intermediaries between

the sex worker and client. Often found in Asia (brothels, bars, masseuse

parlours)
2.Informal sex workers: Informal sex workers are street walkers and

self-employed call-girls or boys, usually find their clients independently.


3. Occasional sex workers: It is another type of informal sex work. They

may sell or trade sex to meet short-term economic needs (eg. school

tuition fee, a family financial crisis) this type of sex work predominates

in most African settings, where sex work is less likely to be a full-time

occupation.
Health issues related to commercial sex work

• Stigmatization and marginalization (The act of treating someone or


something unfairly by publicly disapproving of them and the act of
placing a person or thing in a position of lesser importance, influence,
or power)
• Limited access to health and social services.
• Increased incidence of sexually transmitted diseases such as HIV/AIDS.
• Lack of health promotion programs and funds for improving health of
sex workers.
Factors influencing increased HIV prevalence
in commercial sex workers
• Significant legal and institutional discrimination shown on sex workers
(male and female) put them in great struggle to meet their own
health and well- being needs
• ‫عل‬Health service providers do not want to provide services to sex
workers
• Law enforcement officials like police most often violate the human
rights of sex workers.
• Lack of programs and funding.
Measures to promote health among
commercial sex workers
• Health education and information about HIV and sexual health that
reaches sex workers, clients and the broader population
• Access to appropriate medical services, condoms and other
prevention tools.
• Policies and laws that reduce sex workers 'marginalization and
vulnerability to exploitation should be implemented.
• Social, legal and psychological support should be provided to sex
workers.
New WHO guidelines
• Prevent discrimination of sex workers.
• Improve access to health services for sex workers.
• Interventions to empower sex workers.
• Correct and consistent condom use.
Components of successful interventions
• Promotion of safer sexual behavior among sex workers, clients and
institutions or groups associated with sex workers such as police and sex
workers partners
• Condom availability and correct use- negotiations skills-supportive polices
• Promotion and availability of STI prevention and care services
• Outreach work that includes health, social and legal services
• Peer education among sex workers, client and associated groups.
• Care of people living with HIV/AIDS
• Advocacy for policy ad law reform at nation and local levels including
respect of human rights.

It also needs the collaborative action from individuals, family, non-
government and governmental organization to alleviate the problem.
Some of the measure that should be taken as follow
• Increasing awareness and community mobilization
• Enhancing education facilities to the children
• Focusing on family & children wellbeing
• Mobilizing public health, economic and social issues in the city
• Providing economic and social support to children and poor family
• Enhancing sexual education within family, schools & public areas
