    RNA editing is a process where RNA sequences are altered after transcription from DNA. It was first discovered in trypanosomes in 1986 when non-genomic uracil residues were found in mitochondrial transcripts. There are two main types of RNA editing - nucleobase substitution which alters individual nucleotides, and insertion/deletion which adds or removes nucleotides. Nucleobase substitution occurs via adenosine deamination or cytosine deamination. RNA editing is important for generating protein diversity and is implicated in several human diseases.
