PHOTON (Quantum Of Light)
• In 1905,Einstein proposed that electromagnetic radiation
or light is made up of photons. Thus the photon is the
elementary element of light or light is made up of photons.
• Einstein show that light energy is not emitted continuously
but it is emitted by individual amount of energy called as
quantum of energy.
Energy Of Photon
• According to Einstein, each photon of alight wave of
frequency has the energy E is given by, E=hv
• where E= energy of photon(joule)
h= planks constant-6.626 x10−34
v = frequency of photon(Hz)
Properties Of Photon
• A photon does not have any mass.
• The energy of a photon is directly proportional to
frequency and inversely proportional to its wavelength.
• In the interaction of radiation with matter, radiation
behaves as if it is made up of particles called photons.
Photo Electric Effect
• When a beam of light
sufficiently high frequency
strikes onto a clean metal
surface then the light will
cause electrons to leave the
surface.
• DEFINATION : the
phenomenon of emission of
electrons by the metals when
they are exposed to light of
suitable frequency is called
photo electric effect and
emitted electrons is called as
photoelectrons.
Characteristics Of Photoelectric Effect

• Threshold frequency is different for different material.

• Photoelectric current is directly proportional to intensity of
light.
• The K.E of photoelectrons is directly proportional to
frequency.
• The process is instantaneous.
• There is an increase in the kinetic energy of the emission of
photoelectrons with the increase in the intensity of the
radiation.
Photoelectric Effect Uses and Effects
• Video camera tubes in the early days of television used
the photoelectric effect.
• Photoelectric effect will cause space craft exposed to
sunlight to develop a positive charge.
• Light from the sun hitting lunar dust causes it to become
charged through the photoelectric effect.
Applications of Photoelectric Effect
• Used to generate electricity in solar panels. These panels contain
metal combinations that allow electricity generation from a wide
range of wavelengths.
• Motion and Position Sensors: In this case, a photoelectric
material is placed in front of a UV or IR LED. When an object is
placed in between the Light-emitting diode (LED) and sensor, light
is cut off, and the electronic circuit registers a change in potential
difference
• Lighting sensors, such as the ones used in smartphones, enable
automatic adjustment of screen brightness according to the
lighting. This is because the amount of current generated via the
photoelectric effect is dependent on the intensity of light hitting the
sensor.
• Digital cameras can detect and record light because they have
photoelectric sensors that respond to different colours of light
Photoelectric Effect Equation
• According to Einstein’s theory of the photoelectric effect,
when a photon collides in elastically with electrons, the
photon is absorbed completely or partially by the electrons.
So if an electron in a metal absorbs a photon of energy, it
uses the energy in the following ways.
• Some energy Φ0 is used in making the surface electron free
from the metal. It is known as the work function of the
material. Rest energy will appear as kinetic energy (K) of
the emitted photoelectrons
