you leave the room
 Clean your chair regularly
 Fix your chair when it is unstable or
noisy

 Dispose unnecessary items in your
desk
 Arrange items in your desk drawers
neatly for easy retrieval
 Do not pile up documents on your
desktop
 Wipe your desktop every morning

Telephones

 Clean your telephone regularly


 Set telephone wires neatly around
your desk
 Place your telephone at a most
convenient location for easy use
 Replace your telephone neatly on your
desk when you leave the office

Office Machines

 Clean typewriters, computers, copying


machines, etc. regularly
 Set electric wiring neatly
 Reset office machines for ready use
 Inspect machines regularly and take
actions for required servicing

Cabinets

 Label contents in each cabinet at outer


surface
 Divide cabinet drawers by partitions
 Label each file for easy retrieval
 Do not place anything other than
specified items on top of cabinets for
good appearance
 Sequence of drawer shall be from top
to bottom; left to right

 Allow approx. 4 inches of empty


working space for each drawer
 Before opening a drawer, make sure all
other drawers are closed
 Work on the side of the drawer, not in
front of it

Book Shelves

 Classify books by category for easy


retrieval
 Always return books to their designated
location
 Keep bookshelves clean and tidy
 Do not place anything other than books
 Dispose outdated books and magazines
from time to time regularly

Canteens/Dine Areas

 Do not leave unnecessary things on


dining tables
 Replace chairs under dining tables after
use
 Return tables and chairs in their
original locations when relocated for
meetings or functions
 Put all cups and plates away--for
washing--right after each meal
 Clean up tables immediately after meals

Toilets
 Flush after use
 Clean up toilets and wash-hand basins
once a day
 Replenish toilet paper rolls, soaps, and
paper towels once a day
 All users should always try to keep
toilets clean and tidy
 Check ventilation fans regularly for
effective function

Visual Control in the 5S is a
technique to enable people:

abnormal situations

SEIRI (Sort)

 Do you find unused supplies, tools,


machines, documents or personal
belongings that are not in use in your
workplace? Dispose them so that only
what is need remains.

SEITON (Systematize)

 Are the hallways/fire exits free of


obstacles?
 For plant or shop floor, are the lines on the
floor marked properly? Where SEITON is
practiced, it is easy to identify anything out
of order.

SEISO (Sweep)

 Are equipment, floors and walls clean?


 Do machines and equipment need repair?
Once SEISO is being practiced, any
abnormality is detected.

SEIKETSU (Standardize)

 Do employees wear proper uniform?


 Do employees practice the 3 S’s?

SHITSUKE (Self-Discipline)
