TECHNICAL
TERMS USED IN
RESEARCH
LESSON OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, the students are
expected to:
a. identify the technical terms used in
research;
b. explain the importance of knowing the
technical terms used in research; and
c. discuss the technical terms used in
research by completing the given table
What is RESEARCH?
- The term research is made up of
two words, “re” which means again,
and “search” which means to find.
In other words, research is a
repeated process of finding the truth
and of validating the existing truth.
What is RESEARCH?
- a systematic and scientific process
to answer questions about facts and
relationship between facts.
- an activity involved in seeking
answer to unanswered questions.
What is RESEARCH?
- Research seeks to generate an
answer to the problems as well as
suggesting additional questions on
need of further inquiry.
1. ABSTRACT
- a clear concise summary that
communicates the essential
information about the study in research
journals. It is usually located at the
beginning of an article since this
summarizes all sections and helps the
readers decide whether or not to read
the entire report.
2. INTRODUCTION
- Presents background information,
scope, and focus of the research
paper. It states the objective of the
study or statement of the problem
and significance of the study.
3. HYPOTHESIS
- It is a statement of the predicted
relationship between two or more
variables in a research study; an
educated or calculated guess by
the researcher.
4. VARIABLES
- Are the basic elements which are
measured in a study. They are
observable and measurable. There
are two common types of variables:
the independent, and dependent.
5. THEORY
- It is a general explanation about a
specific behavior or set of events
that is based on known principles
and serves to organize related
events in a meaningful way.
6. REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
- A collected information related to
the research problem. Usually,
information about the problem and
related concepts theories that
explain the existence of the
problem are collected in the RRL.
7. RESEARCH DESIGN
- The game plan or method for
finding out what they want to
know.
- Two types of research design:
• Quantitative Research
• Qualitative Research
7. RESEARCH DESIGN
• QUANTITATIVE DESIGN
the data produced are always numerical and
they are analyzed using mathematical and
statistical methods. Explaining phenomena by
collecting numerical data that are analyzed
using mathematically based methods in
particular statistics. It investigates the what,
where, and when in decision making.
7. RESEARCH DESIGN
• QUALITATIVE DESIGN
Often involves words or language but
they also use pictures or photographs
and observations. It seeks to answer why
and how people behave in the way that
they do. It provides in-depth information
about human behavior.

definition of the terms
that requires it.
• Share your answer to
the class.

others are qualitative.
____ 2. Research is a scientific and
systematic search for relevant information on
a specific topic/area.
