ADULTERANTS IN

TURMERIC POWDER
TURMERIC
•It is a herbaceous root commonly used for food
seasoning as well as for medicinal purpose.
•Its medicinal value is mainly due to its
curcumin.
•Curcumin has also been reported to have
promise for development of therapies for
Alzheimer disease.
ADULTERATION
•The act of making food or drugs of poor quality by adding some other substances to
them.
•The alteration of food quality that takes place deliberately.
•It includes the addition of ingredients to modify different properties of food products
for economic advantage.
•Color, appearance, taste, weight, volume, and shelf life are such food properties.
COMMON ADULTERANTS IN
TURMERIC POWDER
•Due to increase in demand in consumers the producers are trying to keep up the
production by adulteration.
Aniline dye
Yellow lead salts
Metanil yellow
Chalk
Tapioca starch
WHY IT IS ADULTERATED
•Mixing it with chalk powder to increase the volume of the turmeric powder.
•Adding metanil yellow which is often used in the making of the ladoos and mithais
to add the yellow colour.
•Starch is added to the volume of the turmeric powder.
•The polishers add lead chromate (PbCrO4) to the roots, due to its bright yellow
colour, to satisfy wholesalers who prefer to sell vibrant turmeric as it is popular with
consumers. The pigment is often provided to the polishers by the wholesalers.
Additionally, lead chromate also hides any marks or damage to the roots.
METANIL YELLOW
It is carcinogenic and toxic systematic dye that is one of the most common
adulterant.
To detect the presence, take a pinch of termeric powder in a test tube and add a few
drops of HCl and shake it.
If the color of solution turns pink, it has the metanil yellow.
Consuming the turmeric rich in metanil yellow will make you feel
Nauseous
Case stomach disorders
Food poisoning
CHALK POWDER
Some venders use chalk powder as a filler in cheap or low quality turmeric powder.
Take a tea spoon of turmeric powder in a test tube and add some water drops and few
drops of HCl in it.
If the solution releases bubbles then it is positive for chalk.
Consuming too much can cause indigestion.
LEAD CHROMATE
•It is used to enhance the color and is highly dangerous.
•Mix a teaspoon of turmeric powder with water and it will immediately leak the
streaks of water soluble color in the solution and this indicate the presence.
STARCH
•It is found in rice , maize etc and it is used to increase the volume of turmeric
powder.
•Place the turmeric powder under a microscope.
•Turmeric particles will appear yellow angular and bigger whereas the starch particles
will appear pale white rounded and smaller.
HEALTH BENEFITS
Recent studies have also shown that turmeric may have a positive impact on brain
function and mental health. Curcumin has been found to increase levels of brain-
derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a protein that promotes the growth and survival
of neurons in the brain. This may lead to improved cognitive function and a reduced
risk of age-related brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Additionally,
some research suggests that turmeric may have antidepressant effects, potentially
helping to alleviate symptoms of depression and anxiety.
BAD EFFECTS OF
ADULTERATION
Adulteration in turmeric powder reduces the quality and safety of the spice.
It can lead to various health risks including :
long-term toxic effects
allergies
gastrointestinal problems
cancer
Adulterated turmeric powder is often found to contain substances like lead, which is
highly toxic and can massively affect children’s development and pose risks to adults
as well.
