WE USE GERUNDS (VERB+ING)
1. Gerunds are a type of noun. Gerunds can be 4. After prepositions

the subject or the object of a sentence
“Before going out he turned off the heating.”
Swimming is good for you.
“I’m tired of arguing.”
I don’t like swimming.
“These are used for cracking walnuts.”
2. After some verbs: enjoy, love, like, hate, admit, “I passed the exam by remembering the

imagine… 5. In some fixed expressions
I love playing sports.
I can’t stand doing nothing. “As well as doing…”

3. With ‘from’ and ‘to’ with some verbs
He prevented her from leaving.
We look forward to hearing from you soon.

It took him a long time to get used to living in a city.

Some verbs can use either the ‘to do’ or the ‘ing’ form
See / hear / watch someone do / doing
- With the verb form do --> see or hear the whole action
I heard him tell you about the letter.
- With the verb form ing -> see or hear part of the action.
I saw her drinking a coffee in the bar.
Remember / regret/forget
- use ”ing” after these verbs --> talk about something that happened before.
I remember coming here as a child.
- use “to do” after these verbs  refer to something in the future.
Please remember to turn off the lights.
Stop
- I want to stop smoking.  I want to break my habit.
- She stopped to sit down.  She stopped walking so that she could sit down.
Try
- Try reading something in English every day.  try out this experiment.
- Please try to be quiet when you come in.  try hard to do something.
