Introduction
An equation is a statement that equates two algebraic
expressions. A linear equation in one variable x is an
equation that can be written in the standard form

ax + b = 0,

where a and b are real numbers with a ≠ 0.

Solving an equation involving a variable means finding all

values of the variable for which the equation is true.

Such values are solutions and are said to satisfy the

equation.

5
Introduction
The solution set of an equation is the set of all
solutions of the equation.

A linear equation that has the set of all real numbers as its
solution set is called an identity.

A linear equation that is true for some real numbers is

called a conditional equation. A linear equation that is
false for all real numbers is called a contradiction.

Example 1 – Checking a Solution of an Equation
Determine whether x = –3 is a solution of
–3x – 5 = 4x + 16.

Solution
–3x – 5 = 4x + 16 Write original equation.

–3(–3) – 5 4(–3) + 16 Substitute –3 for x.

7
Example 1 – Checking a Solution of an Equation

9–5 –12 + 16 Simplify.

4=4 Solution checks.

Because each side turns out to be the same number, you

can conclude that x = –3 is a solution of the original
equation.

Example 2 – Solving a Linear Equation in Standard
Form

4x – 12 = 0 Original equation.

4x – 12 + 12 = 0 + 12 Add 12 to each side.

4x = 12 Combine like terms.

Divide each side by 4.

x=3 Simplify.

The solution is x = 3. Check this solution in the original

equation.

Solving Linear Equations in
Nonstandard Form

Example 4 – Solving a Linear Equation in Nonstandard Form
x + 2 = 2x – 6 Original equation

–2x + x + 2 = –2x + 2x – 6 Add 2x to each side.

–x + 2 = –6 Combine like terms.

–x + 2 – 2 = –6 – 2 Subtract 2 from each side.

–x = –8 Combine like terms.

(–1)(–x) = (–1)(–8) Multiply each side by –1.

x=8 Simplify.

The solution is x = 8.

Example 4 – Solving a Linear Equation in Nonstandard Form
You can check this as follows.

Check

8+2 2(8) − 6 Substitute 8 for x in original equation.

10 16 − 6 Simplify.

10 = 10 Solution checks.
