Introduction to Microsoft Excel.


Objectives of the lab

• Entering and editing data in excel worksheet.


• Apply formula and functions in the sheet.
• Create and manipulate excel sheets.
What is Microsoft Excel
• Ms excel is a window based application package which is also the
member of Ms office. Ms excel is a powerful tool used to create and
format spreadsheets. Spreadsheet allows information to be organized in
rows and tables and analyzed with automatic mathematics. Spreadsheets
are commonly used to perform many different types of calculations.
How to create a new excel sheet
• File new blank document.
• To save the file
• File save click on the location (Desktop) save
• If you want to open an existing document.
• File open select the location (Desktop) open
• The interface contain three main toolbar.
• Title bar: which has document name followed by our program name.
• Ribbon: displayed just below the title bar is known as ribbon contain
group of commands used in the most common tasks in excel.
• Quick access toolbar: it contain different option like save, undo and redo
which we use frequently.
• Name box: it displays the name of the cell e.g. A1 mean column A, row 1
• Formula bar: where you can enter formula.
• worksheet view options: excel offers three different page view.
• page layout: displays worksheet as they would appear if you printed them
out.
• Page break: display the page break as blue lines.
• Cell: A cell is a smallest but most powerful part of a spreadsheet. You can enter your data into a cell either by
typing or by copy-paste. Data can be a text, a number, or a date. You can also customize it by changing its
size, font color, background color, borders, etc.
• Every cell is identified by its cell address, cell address contains its column number and row number. (If a cell
is on 11th row and on column A, then its address will be A11).
• Worksheet: A worksheet is made up of cells which can contain a value, a formula, or text.
• Workbook: a workbook is a collection of multiple worksheets or can be a single worksheet.
• Rename a worksheet: double click on the worksheet you wish to rename and type the desired name.
• ? Help: this will give you online help for MS excel.
• Zoom control: to use the zoom control click and drag the slider. the number to the right of the slider reflects
the zoom percentage.
Lab practice
• Basic arithmetic operators.+,*/,-
• You can use some built-in functions as well.
• Sum, average, count, min, max, abs, len(text), lower(text), upper(text),
now() concatenate.
• Logical operators. =, <>, >, <, >=, <=.
Lab task
• Make a worksheet to calculate grades of student in a subject.
