 Is computer software designed to help


the user to perform specific tasks.
 Application software consists of programs
designed to make users more productive
and/or assist them with personal tasks.
Application Software
 Application software has a variety of uses:
1. To make business activities more efficient
2. To assist with graphics and multimedia
projects
3. To support home, personal, and educational
tasks
4. To facilitate communications
Application Software
 Application software is available in a variety
of forms:
• packaged
• custom
• Web application
• Open source
• shareware
• freeware
• public domain.
Packaged software
 Packaged software is a collection of
programs that perform similar functions or
have similar features.
 For example, Microsoft Office includes
multiple applications such as Excel, Word,
and PowerPoint.
 Video and audio editing software may also
be available as packaged software, used for
editing music and video files used in a
movie.
Custom software
 Alternatively known as tailor-made
software, custom software is Software that's
made for an individual or business that
performs tasks specific to their needs.
 For example, if you had a home business,
you may hire someone to create a custom
software program to help print and view
invoices.
 By creating custom software, you can have
a program that does exactly what you need
and not most of what you need.
Web application software
 A web application or "web app" is a software program
that runs on a web server. Unlike traditional desktop
applications, which are launched by your
operating system, web apps must be accessed
through a web browser.
 A Web application (Web app) is an
application program that is stored on a remote server
and delivered over the Internet through a browser
interface.
Open source software software

 Open source software is any computer software


that's distributed with its source code available
for modification.
 That means it usually includes a license for
programmers to change the software in any way
they choose:
 They can fix bugs, improve functions, or adapt the
software to suit their own needs..

Shareware software
 Shareware software is a software that
are freely distributed to users on trial basis.
There is a time limit inbuilt in the software( for
example- free for 30 days or 2 months).
 As the time limit gets over, it will be
deactivated. To use it after time limit, you have
to pay for the software.
Users prefer shareware because of following
reasons
• Available free of cost
• helps to know about the product before
buying it

 Freeware software is a software that is available free of
cost.
 An user can download freeware from internet and uses
it.
 These softwares do not provide any freedom of
modifying, sharing and studying the program as in open
source software.
 Freeware is closed source.
Users prefer freeware because of following reasons –

• Can be distributed free of cost

 Public domain software is software that is not
protected by a copyright and so there is no particular
owner or the author has given up ownership rights,
leaving the software available for everyone for use.

software to others at no cost.
 Examples include LINUX, Apache, Firefox,
KOffice, Thunderbird, OpenOffice, KOffice, and
SquirrelMail.
Business Software
 Business software is a computer program designed for
professional use and tailored towards corporations or
businesses, rather than individuals.
 An example of business software is a computer
program designed to allow a restaurant to take orders
on a computer.
 Business software includes programs such as word
processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation, note
taking, personal information manager,

 Word processing software, sometimes called
a word processor, allows users to create and
manipulate documents containing mostly text
and sometimes Graphics
 Millions of people use word processing
software every day to develop documents
such as letters, memos, reports, mailing
labels, newsletters, and Web pages.
Spreadsheet Software
 Spreadsheet software allows users to organize
data in rows and columns and perform calculations
on the data. These rows and columns collectively are
called a worksheet.
 Because of spreadsheet software’s logical approach
to organizing data, many people use this software to
organize and present nonfinancial data, as well as
financial data.
Database Software
 A database is a collection of information that is organized
so that it can be easily accessed, managed and updated.
 Database software is application software that allows
users to create, access, and manage a database. Using
database software, you can add, change, and delete data
in a database; sort and retrieve data from the database;
and create forms and reports using the data in the
database.
Presentation Software
 Presentation software is application
software that allows users to create visual
aids for Presentations to communicate
ideas, messages, and other information to a
group.
 The presentations can be viewed as slides,
sometimes called a slide show, that are displayed
on a large monitor or on a projection screen.

 Note taking software is application software that
enables users to enter typed text, handwritten
comments, drawings, or sketches anywhere
on a page and then save the page as part of
a notebook
 Users find note taking software convenient
during meetings, class lectures, conferences,
in libraries, and other settings that previously
required a pencil and tablet of paper for
recording thoughts and discussions.

 This software includes computer aided
design, desktop publishing, paint/image
editing, photo editing, video and audio
editing, multimedia authoring, and Web page
authoring.
 Power users such as engineers, architects,
desktop publishers, and graphic artists often use
sophisticated software that allows them to work
with graphics and multimedia.

 Computer-aided design (CAD) software
is a sophisticated type of application software
that assists a professional user in creating engineering,
architectural, and scientific designs.
 Desktop publishing (DTP) software
enables professional designers to create sophisticated
documents that contain text, graphics, and many colors.
Professional DTP software is ideal for the production of
high-quality color documents such as textbooks,
corporate newsletters, marketing literature, catalogs,
annual reports.
 Paint software, also called illustration software,
allows users to draw pictures shapes, and other
graphical images with various on-screen tools
such as a pen, brush, eyedropper, and paint
bucket.

 Image editing software provides the


capabilities of paint software and also includes
the capability to enhance and modify existing
images and pictures.
