BRIEF HISTORY

OF ORGANIC
CHEMISTRY
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

First coined the term

organic chemistry.
JONS JACOB
1807 He proposed that a ‘vital
BERZELIUS
force’ was responsible for
the formation of organic
compounds.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Produced an organic
FRIEDRICH chemical, urea, from an
1828
WOHLER inorganic compound
ammonium cyanate.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

He accidentally
WILLIAM HENRY
1856 synthesized synthetic-
PERKIN
organic dye.
RESIDUE OF COAL TAR

MAUVEINE DYE
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Postulated that the

Friedrich August
number of outermost
Kekule von
electron/s of carbon can
1858 Stradonitz and
link with each other
Archibald Scott
creating a detailed pattern
Couper
of atomic bonding.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

He was the first to suggest

the possibility of double
1862 Emil Erlenmeyer
and triple bonds between
carbon atoms.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Friedrich August
Made an extensive study
1865 Kekule von
on benzene.
Stradonitz
BENZENE
Benzene is a widely used
industrial chemical.
Benzene is found in crude
oil and is a major part of
gasoline. It's used to make
plastics, resins, synthetic
fibers, rubber lubricants,
dyes, detergents, drugs and
pesticides.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Clarified the structure of

sugar, developed the
Fischer projection system
1892 Emil Fischer for the tetrahedral carbon
and the lock and key model
for the behavior of peptide
catalysts in protein.
TETRAHEDRAL CARBON
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

First to describe hydrogen

bonding. Hydrogen
Wendell Latimer, bonding is responsible for
1920
Worth Rodebush the important properties
of matter such as boiling
point of water.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

First to conduct studies on

giant molecules,
1928 Wallace Carothers discovered the early
synthetic material
neoprene and nylon.
NEOPRENE NYLON
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Discovered Carbon-14, an
isotope of carbon,
Martin Kamen and
1940 although its existence
Samuel Ruben
were suggested by Franz
Kurie in 1934.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Demonstrated the first

high performance carbon
1958 Roger Bacon fibers, the strongest and
stiffest materials by
weight known to man.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Discovered methods of
synthesizing and
characterizing
Harold Kroto, Buckminsterfullerene or bucky
1958 Richard Smalley, balls and fullerene which
Robert Curl helped in the discovery of
nanotubes and graphene. Made
synthesis of carbon nanotubes
practical.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Made synthesis of carbon

1991 Sumio Iijima
nanotubes practical.
DATE CONTRIBUTOR CONTRIBUTION

Performed
groundbreaking research
Andre Geim,
about graphene, an
2004 Konstantin
allotrope of carbon, and
Novoselov
its two dimensional
properties.
WHAT IS AN ALLOTROPE?

Allotropes are different

structural forms of the same
element in the same physical state.
EXAMPLES OF ALLOTROPES OF CARBON
IN THE LATE 19TH CENTURY AND EARLY 20TH CENTURY, THE
FOLLOWING EVENTS IN THE HISTORY OF ORGANIC CHEMISTRY
TOOK PLACE.

1. Petroleum was discovered leading to the booming of petrochemical industry.

2. Production of artificial rubbers, various adhesives, other petroleum additives and

plastics went underway.
3. Pharmaceutical industry began with the manufacture of acetylsalicylic acid or
aspirin.

4. Polypropylene and high density polypropylene (HDPE) was discovered by Phillips

Petroleum chemists while they are attempting to convert propylene into gasoline

5. Biochemistry was introduced.
