learning objective

The goal of this report is to make students fully understand the

concept of Reader-Response Criticism along with its utilization
and application to literature.
definition
Reader-response criticism is a school of literary theory that
focuses on the reader (or “audience”) and their experience of
a literary work, in contrast to other schools and theories that
focus attention primarily on the author or the content and
form of the work.
propone
nt
Reader-response theory is pioneered by Louise
Rosenblatt (1993), an
American professor emeritus and researcher.
Rosenblatt (1982) describes reading as a
Louise Rosenblatt
transaction and a two-way process with the
involvement of text and reader at a
specific time under certain conditions.
utilizatio
n
Reader-response suggests that the role of the reader is essential to the meaning
of a text, for only in the reading experience does the literary work come alive.
For example, in Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley’s Frankenstein (1818), the
monster doesn’t exist, so to speak, until the reader reads Frankenstein and
reanimates it to life, becoming a co-creator of the text. Thus, the purpose of a
reading response is examining, explaining, and defending your personal
reaction to a text.
assumpti
on
Reader-response theory is based on the assumption that a literary work
takes place in the mutual relationship between the reader and the text.
According to this theory, the meaning is constructed through a
transaction between the reader and the text within a particular context.
STRATEGI
ES
-When writing a reader-response, write as an educated adult
addressing other adults or fellow scholars.

-As a beginning scholar, be cautious of criticizing any text as

“boring,” “crazy,” or “dull.” If you do criticize, base your
criticism on the principles and form of the text itself.
other salient
features
According to this theory, readers bring their own experiences, values,
and beliefs to the text, which shape their understanding and response
to it. This means that each reader’s interpretation of a text is unique
and can vary depending on factors such as their cultural background,
personal experiences, and emotional state. We call this subjective
reader response.
HOW TO MAKE A

4.Answer any guided reading questions you're assigned.
5.Give examples to support your thoughts.
6.Conclude with a summary of your thoughts.
example
literary
criticism
The text, "Ang Paboritong Lugar ni Nanay" by the Filipino author, Rene O. Villanueva, explores the
themes of memory, family, and loss in the lens of a specific location that holds deep emotional
significance for the narrator. From my perspective, the reminiscent viewpoint of the narrator brings
up a sense of nostalgia as it shows the deep, symbolic memories of the character. As a child who has
a close and personal relationship with my mother, the quote, "Makakahanap din kami ng lugar na
magiging paborito niya at paborito ko." brings me to a thought that reminds us that despite the pain
of grief, we will all eventually meet in a place where we could be together without the worry of
losing each other again. In this sentiment, Villanueva effectively highlighted the importance of
seeing hope and joy at the end of a sorrowful and miserable tunnel of life.
Explanation
In this literary criticism, the Reader-Response theory was applied
by writing how and what the reader felt when he was reading the
text. Through this
technique, the reader successfully expressed his sentiment towards
the story.
