THE CONCEPT OF THE

LINE
The NEOM project, specifically The Line, is located in the
northwestern region of Saudi Arabia, near the Red Sea. It
stretches over 170 kilometers and is situated within the
larger NEOM development zone, which spans over 26,500
square kilometers across the provinces of Tabuk and near
the border with Jordan and Egypt.

The Line is a futuristic city concept in Saudi

Arabia's NEOM project, announced in 2021 by
Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The project aims to create a futuristic megacity on
the Red Sea coast, covering an area of
approximately 26,500 square kilometers (10,230 sq
mi).

2
The name "NEOM" is derived from the Greek
word "Neo" (meaning "new") and the Arabic
term "Mostaqbal" (meaning "future"),
symbolizing a vision of a new future.

NEOM is planned as an entirely sustainable

and eco-friendly city, aiming to be powered
entirely by renewable energy like solar, wind,
and green hydrogen.

NEOM is part of Saudi Arabia's larger strategy

to diversify its economy and position itself as
a global leader in technology, tourism, and
innovation.

LINEAR DESIGN: A 170 KM (106 MI) LONG, 200 M (656 FT) WIDE, AND 500 M (1,640 FT)
HIGH LINEAR CITY, MINIMIZING THE CITY'S FOOTPRINT.

ZERO-EMISSIONS: POWERED ENTIRELY BY RENEWABLE ENERGY, WITH NO CARS, STREETS,

OR EMISSIONS.

AUTOMATED TRANSPORTATION: HYPERLOOP AND SELF-DRIVING VEHICLES FOR EFFICIENT

TRAVEL.

WALKABILITY: PEDESTRIAN-FRIENDLY, WITH ALL DAILY NEEDS WITHIN A 5-MINUTE WALK.

INNOVATION HUB: FOCUS ON ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES, ENTREPRENEURSHIP, AND

INNOVATION.

SUSTAINABLE LIVING: INTEGRATION WITH NATURE, USING 100% RENEWABLE ENERGY.

EFFICIENT INFRASTRUCTURE: ADVANCED WATER MANAGEMENT, WASTE DISPOSAL, AND

ENERGY HARVESTING.

UNIQUE URBAN EXPERIENCE: BLENDING TECHNOLOGY, ART, AND CULTURE FOR A

FUTURISTIC URBAN LIFESTYLE.
1. linear design
structure: unlike traditional cities that expand outward in all directions, the line is a 170-kilometer-long linear city, only
200 meters wide but rising to a height of 500 meters.
efficiency: this vertical and linear design minimizes the land footprint, preserving 95% of the natural environment around
it. the design eliminates urban sprawl, creating a more compact and efficient urban environment.

2. vertical layers (zero gravity living)

multi-layered city: the line's architecture is based on the concept of "zero gravity living," where city
functions are stacked vertically in three layers:
pedestrian layer: human-centric spaces with green areas and residential, commercial, and leisure zones.
service layer: an infrastructure layer for services like water, electricity, and waste management, all hidden
underground.
transport layer: a high-speed transit system located beneath the surface, allowing people to travel from
one end of the city to the other in just 20 minutes.

3. mirror facades
reflective surfaces: the line will be encased in mirror-like facades that blend with the surrounding
environment, reflecting the natural beauty of the desert, mountains, and the red sea.
aesthetic impact: this feature gives the city a futuristic appearance while also making it invisible from
certain angles, enhancing sustainability by merging with the natural landscape.
4. sustainability and zero emissions
energy: the line is designed to be 100% powered by renewable
energy, including solar, wind, and hydrogen.
zero cars: the absence of cars or traditional roads reduces pollution.
the city will rely on a high-speed rail system and autonomous
transportation to move people efficiently.

5. smart infrastructure and ai integration

smart city: the line will incorporate ai to monitor and manage city
functions, such as energy distribution, waste management, and
security.
digital architecture: the infrastructure will be embedded with
sensors and data-driven systems to ensure everything runs efficiently,
making it one of the smartest cities in the world.

6. revolutionary urban experience

walkable city: with a focus on the human experience, the line will
have 5-minute walk neighborhoods, where everything needed
(housing, work, schools, leisure, etc.) will be within walking distance.
green spaces: despite being a dense urban environment, the
architecture incorporates open spaces, parks, and gardens within the
vertical layers to enhance quality of life.

7. innovative materials and construction

sustainable materials: the construction of the line will use
advanced, sustainable building materials and modular
construction techniques to reduce waste and speed up development.

8. resilient to climate change

the futuristic architecture of the line also accounts for climate change,
making it a climate-resilient city. the mirrored facade and smart
systems are expected to reduce heat and adapt to environmental
changes.

DEMERITS
• 1. Environmental Concerns
• 2. Displacement of Local Communities
• 4. Feasibility and Economic Viability
• Unproven Technologies: NEOM is relying heavily on futuristic
technologies, such as AI, robotics, flying taxis, and smart cities,
many of which are still in early stages of development or have
not been tested on the scale proposed. The project faces
significant risk if these technologies fail to meet expectations.
• Sustainability vs. Construction: While NEOM aims to be a
fully sustainable city powered by renewable energy, the
massive construction activities required to build a futuristic city
will inherently generate a large carbon footprint. This creates a
paradox where the project could contribute significantly to
environmental degradation before achieving its green vision.
