Switching technique
are used
for transmitting dat
a across from
sender to receiver
by fi nding out
the best path
in large
area network.
Types
There are 3 types of switching
techniques.
1. Circuit Switching
2. Message Switching
3. Packet Switching
Circuit Switching
A complete physical connection is established between
the sender and receiver.
The important property of this technique is a single
connection between two endpoints in the network.
Fixed route for conversation defi ned by the
circuit established to carry it.
A circuit switched network requires 3 phases for data
transmission:
1. Connection Establishment (setup phase)
2. Data Transfer Phase
3. Connection Disconnection (Tear Down
Phase)
Circuit
Switching

Ex: Telephone Network
Advantages:
Since the communication channel
is dedicated , data transmission
delay does not occurs.
Disadvantages:
Chance of delay during connection
establishment phase.
Low effi ciency
Message Switching
◦In Message switching there is no need of
establishing a Dedicated Path between the send
and the receiver.
◦It uses store and forward mechanism.
◦The message is transferred as a complete
unit and routed by the intermediate nodes at
which it is temporarily stored in buff er and
forwarded.
◦Each message is treated as
independent unit.
Message Switching
◦ Each and every node stores the
entire message and forwards to
the next mode.
◦ It is also said to be Stored and
Forward Network.
◦ The device should have Suffi cient
Storage Capacity to store
Packet Switching
Entire data is divided into packets and sent individually .
There is no resource allocation for this packet.
Packet switching is the transfer of small pieces of data
across various networks. These data chunks or
“packets” allow for faster, more efficient data transfer.
Each packet is given a number serial wise . Eg:1,2,3.
All these packets are then sent to the address of
destination computer.
