MAKING SALTS
December 27, 2024 Communication, Critical Thinking,
Collaboration
LEARNING OBJECTIVE : To learn making salts using various chemical reagents.
I can state the reaction between an acid and a base.
I can interpret the products during a neutralization reaction
and write balanced chemical equations for the same.
I can analyse given experimental data and interpret the
results.

LEARNING OBJECTIVE : To learn making salts using various chemical reagents.

General equations for
making salts
Acid + alkali  salt + water Learn
Acid + metal salt + hydrogen Acids: Hydrochloric acid (make chloride)
Nitric acid (make nitrate)
Acid + metal carbonate  salt + water + carbon dioxide Sulphuric acid (make sulphate)

Examples Alkalis: Sodium hydroxide

Nitric acid + Zinc  Zinc nitrate + hydrogen Potassium hydroxide
Zinc hydroxide
Sulphuric acid + Zinc hydroxide  Zinc sulphate + water
• While making a salt, cation combines with anion.
Remember • Metal always tends to be cation.
• While writing the formula for salt, always keep in mind the charges
associated with both cation and anion.
METHODS FOR MAKING SALTS

PRECIPITATION METHOD

TITRATION METHOD
AND We will be discussing about
these methods in the next
two lessons.
QUICK CHECK

Write the name of the salt formed:

1 Hydrochloric acid + calcium carbonate  Calcium chloride

2 Nitric acid + sodium  Sodium nitrate

3 Sulphuric acid+ potassium oxide 

Potassium sulphate

4 Sulphuric acid+ sodium hydroxide  Sodium sulphate
