Are you ready to add some more style and function to your back patio? Today I’m sharing an outdoor coffee table with beverage cooler I designed and created build plans for BuildSomething.com and Kreg Tools. I think this is by far the coolest table I have ever built, not just because it can hold ice and drinks, but because of the versatility and design details.
If you don’t want drinks in the insert? No prob, you can put in plants!
Don’t want plants OR drinks and want extra table space? No prob, just put the lid on top that sits flush and you have a whopping 8 square feet of table-top space!
If you remember, last month I updated my patio for summer with new cushions, pillows, and rugs. I also updated various lighting around my patio, including this hanging chandelier (with citronella candles and under $50, yes please!).
Because of the design of the legs, this table also doesn’t look visually heavy, and the planked herringbone top adds some interesting texture.
If you ever need to remove that insert (which is actually a 3’x8″ plastic planter), then you take out 2 end planks (not nailed in) and voila– easy to take out! The herringbone design of the planked top keeps that piece from moving, when it is in place.
Don’t you love how it looks! This was made almost entirely from cedar-toned pine, which makes it very affordable! The legs I opted for actual Cedar 2x2s because they are a little wider (only by 1/8″) but that little extra helps for sturdiness especially when adding 2 pocket holes per leg on each end.
I dodged the temptation to do X legs and instead opted for alternate angled supports… what would you even call them? I like how it adds just a touch of modern design to a traditional shape.

Here is a peek at the other view when sitting on the sofa…. I’m in LOVE with my new Stok Grill with cast iron grates and switchable inserts. It is maybe the sweetest grill I’ve seen for anything under $500. And those hex planters I made. This little patio of mine is really coming together and I can’t wait to share more next week during summer home tours!
I just need to decide whether I should add back the outdoor curtains to the pergola… would you?
