Recommended materials PAPER: Watercolour paper in at least 200 lb weight unless you wish to stretch a lighter paper; or use watercolour blocks. A NOT surface is the most versatile, although for strong textures a rough paper is excellent as on this occasion. David prefers Saunders Waterford paper, but Bockingford is an excellent, less expensive alternative.
A cartridge sketch book is invaluable for doing preliminary thumbnail sketches and testing colour mixes.
BRUSHES: Rosemary & Co. brushes. Numbers 4, 8 and 12 round (or 4, 6 and 10 if preferre Number 1 rigger, large wash brush (minimum) sable brushes are best for watercolours but modern synthetic ones can be effective and are cheaper.
PAINTS: Daniel Smith Extra Fine Watercolours: Burnt Sienna; Burnt Umber; Raw Sienna/Yellow Ochre; Cadmium Yellow Pale; Light Red; Cadmium Red; French Ultramarine; Cobalt Blue; Pthalo Blue; Cadmium Orange; Naples Yellow; Crimson Alizarin; New Gamboge; Indigo; quinacridone gold, Lunar Blue, Green Apatite Genuine, Aussie red gold, Quinacridone Sienna, Sodalite genuine, and Transparent red oxide.
PALETTE with some deep wells for larger washes. A saucer would be useful if you don't have deep wells.
Pencils: 3B and/or 4B
OTHER ITEMS: Drawing board, soft Eraser, masking fluid, craft knife for sharpening pencils, water pot, rags, tissues and wet wipes are all useful
