STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Amazon is making big changes in the way they package their deliveries.

“We’re constantly inventing and thinking big to make our packaging small,” the company said in a blog post published on June 20. “We want to ensure that customers receive their items undamaged, while using as little packaging as possible to avoid waste and prioritizing recyclable materials.”

That’s why all U.S. Amazon deliveries will soon be packed with recycled paper filler instead of air pillow packaging – a move the company calls the “largest plastic package reduction effort in North America.” The shift is expected to eliminate nearly 15 billion plastic air pillows annually.

Amazon has already replaced roughly 95% of plastic pillows from delivery packaging and is working towards full removal by the end of the year. The effort builds on Amazon’s ongoing investment in reducing packaging and increasing curbside recyclability across all of its operations.

According to the company, deliveries for this year’s Prime Day - dates of which haven’t been announced – will all be made with recycled paper filler.
