FISH FORM AND FUNCTION by Jennifer Granneman
What is a fish? Why are some fish colorful and others aren’t? Why do fish look the way they do???
Body shapes Fast swimming, very streamlined, open water fishes Not constantly swimming, require bursts of speed, among coral or rocks Flight like swimming, may live on or near the bottom Elongate, thin body, moves like a wavy ribbon, around or under rocks May be slow-moving, may be deep-water dwellers
Other Adaptions Pectoral fins (for balance, turning, braking) Fish eye position
Summary • Think about how fish form follows function when examining a fish • Fishes’ body shape, mouth placement, caudal fin types, and coloration can tell us a great deal about how fish work – where they live, what they eat, etc. • Now use the fish illustration cards and clue cards to infer which habitat your fish live in, how or what they eat, and how they move and protect themselves • Look closely at body shape and size, coloration, fin shape and position, eye and mouth shape
