a contractor in Peshawar, died, leaving his mother with few resources.
In 1922, started his hotel career with a low-paid of INR 50 as a billing
clerk position at Shimla's The Cecil.
He was working there as a bellboy within two years he assisted the
Cecil's manager, Mr. Clarke, in purchasing The Carlton Hotel (renamed
Clarkes) in Shimla, and ten years later, in 1934, upon Clarke's
retirement, he gathered all the family resources to purchase the hotel.
As India became independent, M. S. Oberoi built additional hotels,
while expanding his base holdings. In 1948, he established East India
Hotels, now known as EIH Ltd., whose first acquisition was the Oberoi
Grand Hotel in Calcutta.
In April 1955 he was elected President of the Federation of Hotel

10. In the history of Indian hotel industry, the story of
Clarkes really begins in the 1920s when Mr. Ernest
Clarke arrived as Manager of the Cecil, as Clarkes was
known in those days.
Wanting to take a break from their busy schedule, Mr.
Clarke and his wife decided to hand over the
responsibility of managing Hotel Carlton - now renamed
as Clarkes to Mr.oberoi.
After continuous hard work for five years, on 14th
August, 1934, Rai Bahadur Mohan Singh Oberoi became
the sole and absolute owner of Hotel Carlton, Shimla.
He subsequently named it after Mr. Ernest Clarke.
The hotel maintains the highest levels of service and
has all the amenities, facilities and levels of comfort
you would expect from a hotel of this class.
Clarkes Hotel is just 10 minutes from Shimla Station.
Clarkes Hotel has been upgraded from the 'Heritage'
category to 'Heritage Grand' category by the Ministry
of Tourism in 2012.
13. The site where the hotel now stands was first
developed at No. 13 Chowringhee Road as the
private residence of a Colonel Grand in the
early nineteenth century.
IT was managed by Arathoon Stephen, an
Armenian from Isfahan. When, in 1911, the
theatre burned down, Stephen bought out Mrs.
Monk and, over time, redeveloped the site into
what now makes up the modern hotel. Built in
an extravagant neoclassical style, the hotel
soon became a popular spot amongst the
English population of Calcutta.
In the 1930s, sometime after the death of
Stephen, a typhoid epidemic in Calcutta
resulted in the death of six people at the
hotel. The drainage system at the hotel was
suspected and it was closed in 1937. The
property was leased by Mohan Singh Oberoi
who reopened the hotel in 1939 and was able to
buy the property outright in 1943.
16. It is best remembered as the former residence of Lord
Kitchener of Khartoum, the Commander in Chief of the British
Army, almost as soon as he arrived in Shimla.
After he left India, the Goldstein family sold Wildflower Hall
to Mrs. Hotz who converted it into a hotel.
The place became a popular residence for visitors and weekend
resort for the Shimla public.
Before the formation of the Himachal Pradesh Tourism
Development Corporation in 1972, the Wildflower Hall was
being run as a hotel by the Department of Tourism.
Unfortunately, the building was gutted in a devastating fire in
the year 1993.
The Oberoi group took over and began construction the year
1995 and a majestic new building was erected among the
sylvan surroundings and sweet smelling pines.

Hotels & Resorts brand, operates about 4,100 hotels and motels. The
chain, with its corporate headquarters in Phoenix, Arizona, operates
2,163 hotels in North America.
In 1964, Best Western took the first step towards global expansion
when Canadian hotel owners joined the system. Best Western then
expanded to Mexico, Australia, and New Zealand in 1976.
In 2002, Best Western International launched Best Western Premier
in Europe and Asia.
In 2011, the chain's branding system-wide changed to a three-tiered
system: Best Western, Best Western Plus, and Best Western Premier.
Since it no longer operates under a single brand, Best Western
concurrently modified its slogan in 2011 from "the world's largest
hotel chain" to "the world's largest hotel family."
INTRODUCTION
30. Best Western began in the years following World
War II. At the time, most hotels were either
large urban properties or smaller family owned
roadside hotels.
In California, a network of independent hotel
operators began making referrals of each other
to travelers. This small and informal network
eventually grew into the modern Best Western
hotel chain founded by M.K. Guertin in 1946.
Best Western's "Gold Crown" logo was introduced
in 1964 and would continue with a few minor
revisions over the next 32 years until it was
replaced by the blue and yellow logo in 1996.
In 2015, Best Western introduced a new family
of logos, replacing the core logo and adding
signage for Best Western Plus and Best Western
Premier.
HISTORY
32. M.K. Guertin was born on January 18, 1891 in Liberty, Texas,
northeast of Houston. He worked on the family farm and as an
apprentice in the printing trade.
He was involved in the creation of the Southern California Auto
Court Association and the California Auto Court Association in
1925. He purchased the Cherry Motor Court in Long Beach in 1933,
and in 1938 purchased the Beach Motel, which would become the
first Best Western property. Over time he built or owned 13 motels
in the California.
In 1946 he started an association of independently owned hotels to
refer business to each other, which was the beginning of Best
Western
Members were initially recruited by Guertin who sought varied
hotels from small roadside motor courts to urban hotels as long as
the owners agreed to adhere to the association's high standards of
quality and service. Over time, this referral program grew into Best
Western, the world's largest hotel chain.
