3. The Origin of the Name, Egypt
* Egypt has had many names in many different languages.
Today, its official name is Junhuriyah Misr al-Arabiyah,
which in English means the Arab Republic of Egypt.
*The English name Egypt is derived from the ancient Greek
Aígyptos (Αἴγυπτος). Egypt by the Arabic
Language
*The ancient Egyptian name of the country is Kemet which
means "black land", referring to the fertile black soils of the
Nile flood plains.
* Egyptians themselves refer to Egypt as Misr which means
“the Protected Land”.

The Egyptian flag is tricolour consisting of the
three equal horizontal bands:
1-Red color (upwardly): refers to the strength

2- White colour (in the middle) : refers to the

3-Black colour (downwardly): refers to ages of
backwardness and colonialism and that is gone
forever.

*Egypt lies between latitudes 22 and 32 N,
and longitudes 24 and 36 E.
* The Nile river is extending in the middle
of Egypt from the south to the north to form
the Nile Valley in the south and the Delta in
the north.
* There are there main deserts in Egypt :
1- The Western Desert :
The biggest one and forms 70% of the total
area of Egypt (700,000 km2) between the
Nile and Libya with plain nature.
2- The Eastern Desert:
Situated between the Nile and the Red Sea Topography of Egypt
and covers 220,000 km2 (22% of the total
area of Egypt)with mountainous nature.
