Tsunamis are large sea waves caused by earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, landslides, or cosmic impacts undersea. An earthquake typically triggers a tsunami by displacing large volumes of water and causing the water level to suddenly rise or lower. As the disturbed water moves away from the quake zone, it can travel hundreds of miles across the ocean and build into huge waves. When the wave approaches the shore it may grow huge and come onshore with devastating destructive power. Proper preparation and heeding warning signs can help minimize damage from tsunamis.
