The lumbar plexus originates from the ventral rami of spinal nerves L1-L4 and provides motor and sensory contributions to the anterior and medial compartment of the leg as well as the abdominal wall and pelvic areas. It supplies the iliohypogastric nerve from L1 which innervates abdominal wall muscles and the pubic region, and the ilioinguinal nerve also from L1 which innervates abdominal wall muscles and the upper inner thigh and pubic area. The lumbar plexus connects to the sacral plexus via the lumbosacral trunk formed from parts of L4 and all of L5.
2. Lumbar Plexus
The lumbar plexus
originates from ventral
rami of L1–L4.
It provides motor and
sensory contributions to
the anterior and medial
compartment of the leg as
well as to the abdominal
wall and pelvic areas.
3. Iliohypogastric nerve (L1).
Provides a portion of the motor
innervation to the abdominal wall
muscles and sensory innervation
to the pubic region.
Ilioinguinal nerve (L1).
Provides a portion of the motor
innervation to the abdominal wall
muscles and sensory innervation
to the superior medial thigh and
pubic area.
The lumbar plexus and sacral plexus are united via the lumbosacral trunk, which is
comprised of a portion of L4 nerve root anterior rami, and all L5 anterior rami.
