2. OK, so who are you??
• Pastor at Zion Lutheran Church in Frewsburg, NY
• Was pastoral staff leader for Participation (among
other ministry areas) at Prince of Peace, Clifton
Park during Internship and afterwards
• Spiritual Gifts Assessment and matching
ministries at two different congregations
3. So…..Before We Begin…
• Why are you here?
• What have you heard about spiritual gifts before?
• Have you taken a spiritual gifts assessment
before? If so, what was it like? If not, how do you
feel about taking one today?
• Are there any spiritual gifts that you’ve heard of
before that have you puzzled?
4. What are Spiritual Gifts???
• Spiritual gifts are special abilities given by the
Holy Spirit, to each member of the body of Christ,
in order to fulfill the mission of the Church.
• Two major Greek words used in Scripture
• Charismata (charis= grace)
• Pneumatika (pneuma= spirit)
5. So What?
• Knowing what gifts you’ve been given by God will
help you better serve God, fulfilling our baptismal
calling (stewardship)
• Knowing your spiritual gifts will affect what
ministries in and out of Church you will be best
suited for, and what you will want to get involved in
• Knowing your spiritual gifts will stave off burn-out,
i.e. spending time and energy on ministries that you
don’t have the gifts for
6. What’s the Bible Say About This?
• There are 3-4 Bible passages that directly deal with
spiritual gifts by describing and listing some of
them:
-Romans 12:4-8
-1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30
-Ephesians 4:11-13
-[1 Peter 4: 10-11]
• These lists are no in way exhaustive; other gifts are
described in other places in the Bible
• Let’s look at these spiritual gifts passages!
7. Romans 12:4-8
• 4 For as in one body we have many members, and not all the
members have the same function, 5 so we, who are many, are
one body in Christ, and individually we are members one of
another. 6 We have gifts that differ according to the grace
given to us: prophecy, in proportion to faith; 7 ministry, in
ministering; the teacher, in teaching; 8 the exhorter, in
exhortation; the giver, in generosity; the leader, in diligence;
the compassionate, in cheerfulness.
9. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30
• Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be
uninformed. 2 You know that when you were pagans, you were enticed and
led astray to idols that could not speak. 3 Therefore I want you to
understand that no one speaking by the Spirit of God ever says “Let Jesus
be cursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit.
• 4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5 and there are
varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6 and there are varieties of
activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7 To
each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8 To one
is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the
utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by
the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10 to another
the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of
spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of
tongues. 11 All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to
each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.
10. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30 (con’t)
27 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it.
28 And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second
prophets, third teachers; then deeds of power, then gifts of
healing, forms of assistance, forms of leadership, various kinds
of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? Are all prophets? Are all
teachers? Do all work miracles? 30 Do all possess gifts of
healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret?
11. 1 Corinthians 12: 1-11; 27-30
Gifts Listed:
• Wisdom
• Knowledge
• Faith
• Healing
• Miracles
• Prophecy
• Discernment
• Tongues
• Interpretation of tongues
• **** Not being uninformed about spiritual gifts
• ****Not everyone has the same gifts!! (“Are all prophets??...”)
12. Ephesians 4:11-13
11 The gifts he gave were that some would be apostles,
some prophets, some evangelists, some pastors and
teachers, 12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry,
for building up the body of Christ, 13 until all of us come
to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son
of God, to maturity, to the measure of the full stature of
Christ.
13. Ephesians 4:11-13
Gifts Listed:
• Apostle
• Prophet
• Evangelism
• Pastoring
• Teaching
• “To equip the saints for the work of ministry, for
building up the body of Christ”
14. [1 Peter 4: 10-11]
10 Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one
another with whatever gift each of you has received.
11 Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words
of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God
supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through
Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever
and ever. Amen.
15. [1 Peter 4: 10-11]
• A bit different than the other passages
• No specific spiritual gifts listed, instead saying
each of us should use the gifts given to us…
• When speaking and serving we should be
speaking and doing the work of God
16. So, how do we find out our personal
spiritual gifts??
• There are many different lists of spiritual gifts
based from Scripture
• Each assessment will test for different gifts
depending on how many questions there are
and how detailed they can be
• Many assessments will categorizegifts for
better understanding
17. How is a spiritual gift assessment different
from a “Time and Talents” sheet?
• Time and Talents sheets ask people to check
off gifts they think they have so that ministry
leaders can plug them in
• Spiritual gift assessments actually find out
what gifts each person actually has and then
both the person and ministry leaders can work
together to figure out where the person can
best use his/her gifts, both in life and in the
Church
18. One of the most detailed spiritual gift
assessments out there….
• The 3 Colors of Ministry by Christian A. Swartz (part of
the Natural Church Development (NCD) program)
• Tests for 30 gifts
• Tests for Manifest gifts (gifts you already use and are
probably confirmed) and Latent gifts (gifts you can
experiment with to see if you have them)
• 180 questions, 2 people poll, scoring grid, normalization
chart
• Gifts put into 3 color categories: green (Creator & world),
red (Christ & Scripture), and blue (Spirit & experience)
20. ELCA Spiritual Gift Assessment (The one
we are going to use today!)
• Tests for 20 spiritual gifts
• 60 questions, usually takes under 10 minutes
• You can take it online (or print it out) at
http://www2.elca.org/evangelizingchurch/asse
ssments/spiritgifts.html
• OR go to www. elca.org and type in “spiritual
gift assessment” in the search bar
22. Some helpful hints….
• The key for answering the questions is on the
bottom of each page (4= consistently true, etc.)
• Don’t over-think it, answer with your gut
• Take a breather when you finish answering all the
questions– we will score our assessments together
so that we won’t get confused
• Remember: there are no “right” answers. Everyone
is given different gifts by the Spirit, and that’s
what makes us unique!
28. Awesome! I know my gifts! Now what??
• Check out pages 2 & 3 in your packet for
descriptions of your spiritual gifts (Homework:
check out the Bible passages for your gifts!)
• Any surprises? Any affirmations of what you
already knew??
• Any confusion about your spiritual gifts?
29. OK, so now that I know what my gifts are,
how do I use them?
• Check out pages 10 & 11 in your packet for
suggestions of where your gifts can be used
• Keep in mind– your congregation may have
different ministries than the ones listed– try to find
a ministry that is similar, or start your own!
• We are not only called to use our gifts in the
Church, but also in the world. Let’s use page 12
and list a few ways you can use your gifts at home,
and work, and in your community.
30. Reactions?
• What did you think about this experience of
learning about spiritual gifts and finding out what
some of yours are?
• How will you go forward differently now that you
know your spiritual gifts? (OR, to go with the
Synod Assembly theme, how will you be
transformed in learning and using your spiritual
gifts?)
• For an even deeper look, try The 3 Colors of
Ministy book and assessment (and test for even
more gifts!)
