The student's initial idea was to take photos of people dancing and listening to music to capture how they act. However, they decided this had been done before and chose to photograph trees in foggy conditions instead to create an eerie atmosphere. Photos were taken from different angles and edited black and white. Sections of the photos were cut and arranged on black card to look staggered. The aim to portray an abandoned feel was achieved. Research on nature photographers provided inspiration. Overall it was a simple project that could have benefited from more planning and trying new skills.

The Idea- For this unit we could decide ourselves what we wanted to do such as; photography, stop motion, music video etc. We then had to make this our own personal project and make it unique to us. My first idea was to have photos of people dancing and listening to their favourite songs. Then see how they act when listening to it and capturing what they do because you never really see how you act when doing a certain thing. After some thinking I decided to change my idea because lots of people in the past had done ideas similar and I wanted to do something original that no one had done before. I thought of a new idea to take photos of trees in foggy, misty conditions because I like the affect that it gives the photo to make it look eerie and abandoned. Some of the shots I took where from down low angles to give an idea of what animals see when they look up and how big and tall the trees actually are. My final idea was to take roughly about 6 or 7 photos of different trees and edit them to make them black and white to give it an eerie feeling. I then printed the photos and cut them up into different sections. I put them onto a black background to make them stand out more. I staggered the photos so it looks cooler and more original.

My final idea was the complete opposite to people and featured nature and natural things. Another thing is that my final idea was displayed in a much simpler way and I didn’t have to get permission from people to use them otherwise if I did my project on people, I would have had to of got them to sign permission slips to be able to use the photos. The editing process was also a lot easier because for the photos of my trees all I had to do was edit the colour balance and then that was it, however if I used my initial idea the editing process would have been a lot more complicated because I would have had to edit the faces , the lighting to get every photo the same and then would have had to edit the lyrics of the song onto the photo as well. I feel like I achieved trying to make people see what animals see and my photos look sad and lonely almost.
- 4. Finishedproduct The aim of my project was to create an eerie atmosphere on my photos and make it look like its an abandoned site. I feel like I managed to achieve this with the photos that I produced. I feel like my photos managed to turn out how I planned them too. In my head I had a clear image of what I wanted to do and how I wanted my photos to look and how they were going to be displayed.
- 5. Pre-Production and production Research Before I started planning my idea I had to do research to gather ideas and tips.I went online and searched for people who did nature photography and took ideas from then and also read about how to give a photo a certain look so I could make it look its best. I looked at Phillip Hyde who is a landscape photographer. He did a lot of work with nature and had done a lot of black and white photos so I managed to get some inspiration from him Planning Process The process of creating my photos was not complicated at all. One day after school I visited the woods and started to take the photos that I wanted. I had to then bring the SD card with my photos on back into school and import them on to the computer. Then all I had to do was open them in Photoshop. Because I wanted my photos in black and white I had to play around with the white balance to get it right. To separate my photos in to separate pieces, I had to use the crop tool then put the ne photo onto a different layer so I wouldn’t lose the original photo.
- 6. Post Production • Once I had taken my photos and edited them on the computer and cut them into separate sections, I then had to find a way to display them. My idea to display them was to get the different sections of the photo and put them onto a black board so then they would stand out and place them on staggered so it was original and had a sort of modern look to it. • Because I wasn’t able to gain access to a black board, I had to use black card which was annoying because once the card had been folded, there was a permanent crease in the paper which made the photos look un neat. If I had to do it again, I would make sure I could find a better way of displaying the photos so it looked better and more professional.
- 7. Evaluation • The strengths of this project was that I chose an area that I had good skills within. Because I took photos, they needed editing on Photoshop which I am good at. I used tools such as the crop tool and the magic wand tool to achieve what I wanted. Another strength was that it was not very time consuming, the photos themselves took an afternoon to take and only a double lesson to edit them how I wanted. • A weakness is that my chosen sector was quite simple so I wasn’t able to push myself to try new things and get out of my comfort zone. Another weakness is that I rushed a lot of it, I should of spent more time on the pre production tasks and planning my work more thoroughly. • If I were to do this again I would of chosen a different sector of media like a magazine or short film because it would enable me to try new things and gain new skills in them areas. I also would take more time to think about my idea and gain input from others who may be able to add to my idea.
