SUGARCANE India is the world's second largest producerSunder Rao
India is the world's second-largest producer of sugarcane, primarily cultivating it in states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, and Gujarat. This crop is vital to India’s economy, contributing significantly to the agriculture sector and providing raw materials for sugar production, ethanol, jaggery, and other by-products.
Key Aspects of Sugarcane Cultivation in India:
Climatic Requirements: Sugarcane thrives in tropical and subtropical climates. It requires high temperatures (20°C-40°C), abundant sunlight, and an annual rainfall of 750-1200 mm, though supplemental irrigation is often necessary.
Irrigation: Efficient irrigation is crucial for high yield, especially in water-scarce regions. Traditional methods like flood irrigation are common, but there’s a shift toward more efficient methods such as drip and center pivot irrigation to improve water use efficiency. Advanced irrigation methods are encouraged to address water scarcity and to increase yield.
Crop Varieties: India has developed several sugarcane varieties suitable for different climatic zones. Co varieties (e.g., Co-86032) and newer breeds offer higher yields, better disease resistance, and suitability for ethanol production.
Productivity and Challenges:
Yields: Sugarcane productivity in India averages 70-75 tons per hectare, though advanced farming techniques and improved irrigation can push this higher.
Challenges: Key issues include fluctuating prices, delayed payments to farmers, pest infestations, water scarcity, and competition from other crops in water-stressed areas.
Government Policies and Support:
The Indian government provides support through subsidies for drip irrigation systems, minimum support prices (MSP), and incentives for ethanol production, aiming to increase income stability for farmers.
There are also policies promoting ethanol blending in fuel to reduce oil imports and support the sugar industry, with the Ethanol Blending Program (EBP) targeting a 20% blend by 2025.
Sustainability: Water use efficiency, soil health management, and sustainable pest control practices are increasingly emphasized to make sugarcane cultivation more resilient and sustainable.

The impact of climate change on storm drainage system.pdfudayamosol9
Aging stormwater systems are struggling to cope with the rising challenges of increased rainfall and sea level rise. As climate change accelerates, urban areas around the world are facing frequent flooding, overwhelmed drainage networks, and costly infrastructure damage. Traditional systems, many built decades ago, are no longer sufficient to manage the volume and speed of stormwater runoff. The solution lies in embracing green infrastructure, permeable surfaces, and modern drainage technologies that work with nature rather than against it. These approaches help absorb and redirect water more efficiently, reduce urban flooding, and improve water quality. By integrating rain gardens, bioswales, permeable pavements, and smart drainage channels, cities can build resilience into their landscapes. Leenus is at the forefront of these innovations—designing systems that are not only functional and durable but also environmentally responsible. Discover how forward-thinking infrastructure can protect communities and create more sustainable urban environments for the future.
