A baby born with a misshapen skull and part of his brain sticking out just celebrated his first birthday.
When early pregnancy scans discovered that Ozzie Gordon’s head was smaller than normal, doctors offered his parents Omobola and Checotah Gordon the option to abort.
The couple refused and when their little angel was born, his brain and skull hadn’t developed properly, causing brain tissue to stick outside the skull.
Ozzie has anencephaly, a birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the skull and brain.
According to the CDC, the condition affects one in 4,600 babies in the US, and almost all with the condition pass away shortly after birth.
Ozzie’s complete skull is misshapen and caused encephalocele, a part of brain tissue outside the skull and only the skin is protecting it.
Despite his condition, baby Ozzie has defied the odds and just celebrated his first birthday. His parents call him a ‘miracle’ and are determined to give brave Ozzie a normal life.
25-year-old Mrs. Gordon said: “People are always telling us how much of a miracle and a blessing Ozzie is to our family. Surprisingly, people in public always have something positive to say.
“We really just hope to give him the best life possible. God willing, he lives a long time we strive to make it as normal as possible for him and to embrace his differences among his peers.
“We hope for him to be accepted by society regardless of him lacking a major part of his brain and looking different.”
She added: “We hope that he can be a vessel to touching people’s hearts and being an example that miracles do happen and special children deserve just as much love and care as other children.”
Even though he can’t crawl yet, he smiles like other babies. His smile warms everyone’s hearts.
Mrs. Gordon shares their journey online to help other families who also have children with special needs.
“I think that very often people think they are going through things alone and really it’s not until we speak up and people are more informed that they can then reach out and show you the love and support you didn’t know you needed.
“It is amazing to see strangers from other parts of the world reach out to me and say how much they are supporting us and praying for Ozzie. That feeling is just unbeatable.”
