Breaking Bad is a crime media franchise based on two series, Breaking Bad (2008-2013) and Better Call Saul (2015-2022), and the movie El Camino: A Breaking Bad Movie (2019).

The fictional universe, also called Gilliverse, can be a bit confusing to watch. The first episode of Breaking Bad aired on January 20, 2008, and since then the series won several awards. Created by Vince Gilligan, Better Call Saul has a total of six seasons with 63 episodes and Breaking Bad had five seasons with 62 episodes.

Watching the Breaking Bad universe in the correct sequence is essential since the show has major twists and turns.


How to watch the Breaking Bad universe in chronological order?

1. Better Call Saul (Season 1- Season 6 Episode 9)

If you are new to the Breaking Bad universe, start with the first six seasons of Better Call Saul. This part of the series deals with the prequel of the Breaking Bad storyline. The first episode of Better Call Saul is called 'Uno' while the ninth episode of season 6 is titled, 'Fun and Games'

The plot revolves around the rise of Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk as a defense attorney in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Watch him hustle in his early career days with support from colleagues like Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn).

Jimmy McGill hustles between his professional and personal lives. Season 6, Episode 9 finally shows how Jimmy finally ditches the good path and with the moral downfall becomes the criminal lawyer Saul Goodman.

These episodes help us understand the meaning of his actions and motivations across the successor episodes. Interestingly, Better Call Saul also introduces several characters and events which are later referred to in Breaking Bad.


2. Breaking Bad (Season 1 Episode 1- Season 5 Episode 15)

After finishing Better Call Saul Season 6 Episode 9 you can start watching the Breaking Bad series. The story introduces us to Walter White (Bryan Cranston), a high school chemistry teacher who is diagnosed with chronic lung cancer. To secure his family's finances he teams up with former drug dealer Jessie Pinkman (Aaron Paul) to make and sell a drug that could be dangerous to mankind.

The Breaking Bad Season 1 Episode 1 is titled 'Pilot' and aired on AMC on January 20, 2008. The last episode of Breaking Bad is titled Felina, where we see Walter make a final attempt to secure his family's finances before finally returning to Albuquerque, New Mexico.


3. El Camino: A Breaking Bad movie

The fate of Jesse Pinkman is explored in the spin-off movie El Camino: A Breaking Bad movie. The story is set immediately after the end of the Breaking Bad finale episode. This 2019 Netflix film explores how drug dealer Jesse Pinkman fled from captivity to Albuquerque for a new life and identity.

Created by Vince Gilligan, this movie was well appreciated by critics and won several awards too including Critic's Choice Television Award and Satellite Awards.

4. Better Call Saul (Season 6, Episode 10 - Season 6 Episode 13)

After watching the El Camino movie, you can watch the final few episodes of Better Call Saul. The plot of the finale episodes of Better Call Saul revolves around Jimmy McGill living in Omaha, Nebraska with a new identity of Gene Takavic.

The episodes show how the former lawyer takes one last chance to fulfill his criminal thoughts and finally get the karma for his actions.
