The Humpback Salmon

The Pink Salmon is a species of the Salmon family and most abundant of the Pacific variety, and its name stems from the Russian word Gorbúša which literally means humpie. This down to the fact that during their spawning migration, males develop a famous pronounced humped back. The Pink salmon are coldwater fish and inhabit thousands of rivers and streams worldwide; they’ve also been introduced into many lakes, including the Great Lakes of North America, where there are now self-sustaining populations.

The life of a Pink Salmon is short, only living for two years. The young are hatched in streams and rear for several months before migrating towards the ocean; after spending less than two years here, they migrate back into the streams, spawn, and die. Due to their short life span, the Pink Salmon is the smallest Salmon species, an average fish is around 5lb in weight, and the biggest ever landed on rod and line is only 14lb.

Despite not growing very large, the Pink Salmon is still considered a great sportfish; the willingness to take lures and flies make it an angler’s favourite. When they’re running up the rivers from the ocean, they can provide some fantastic sport on balanced freshwater fly fishing tackle; they’re aggressive little fighters and tend to move in large numbers providing some non-stop action.

Below are the top destinations in the world for Pink Salmon Fishing.
