Noivern Pokémon

Last Modified Jun 29, 2021 11:52 GMT

Introduced in the generation six games with Pokemon X and Y, Noivern is a dual type flying and dragon Pokemon. Noivern evolves from Noibat at level 48. A large bat-like Pokemon that uses noise to attack, Noivern’s relatively new status means that it has not had a bulk of chances to appear in the anime. Even its competitive battling status is mildly mediocre, especially for the dragon representative that it is. This guide will showcase Noivern’s capabilities in battle, its appearances in the anime, as well as other general facts about Noivern.

About Noivern

While introduced in generation six with Pokemon X and Y, it made its first anime appearance in the Black and White season of the show. Noivern made its debut with the episode Celebrating the Hero’s Comet. In the games, it is the final evolution of the Pokemon Noibat evolving at level 48. It is relatively unique in this regard, especially as a part dragon type as this typing typically depicts a standalone Pokemon or a trio of evolutions. Many fans speculate that noise/sound will eventually become a type of typing as many Pokemon, like Noivern, have sound based attacks.

Appearance

Noivern looks like a giant bat with two large speakers for ears. Its wingspan is rather large, but it stands at 4 feet and 11 inches, or 1.5 meters, tall. The inside of its wings are a pale green, while most of its body is black or purple. It has a red crest above its mouth and a tuft of white fur around its neck. Noiverns eyes are blue with a yellow sclera. To go in line with its namesake, Noivern also resembles wyverns of European mythology.

Behavior

To go along with its bat-like appearance, Noivern is a nocturnal Pokemon. The Pokedex makes it out to be a predator of sorts and its capabilities in battle at night are unmatched. It also continues to mention Noivern’s cruelty in attacking prey, tormenting them in the dark. Noivern’s ears are capable of emitting waves that can shatter a large boulder. It is known to be a violent Pokemon, but becomes much friendlier upon feeding it a ripe fruit that it loves.

Strengths and Weaknesses

Noivern’s biggest strength lies in its speed stat. Whatever you want to accomplish with Noivern, you will likely complete it first with its higher than average speed stat. Unfortunately, the rest of its stats do not align with sweeping or tanking a lot of hits. With its typing, it is extremely weak to any ice attack with a 4x weakness. Any rock, dragon, or fairy type move will also take care of a Noivern with ease. Despite its Pokedex entries mentioning its cruelty and unmatched nighttime battle capabilities, Noivern is not particularly a threatening Pokemon.

Shiny Noivern

The color palette for Shiny Noivern is quite distinct from regular Noivern. The colors on Shiny are matched differently, with its exterior changing from black to electric green, its body turning from a bright purple to dark purple, and the color of its ears becoming a dark red. The crest on its nose also changes color from red to purple. Shiny Noivern is quite striking from its regular counterpart. Like all shiny Pokemon, Shiny Noivern gains a starry animation upon entering battle.

Best Moveset

While not particularly fierce in competitive battle, it has its place as a high speed offensive Pokemon in its respective tier. In order to give Noivern a better chance of survival, you will want to use Heavy-Duty Boots as a held item to prevent hazards from chipping away at your Noivern. For a moveset consider running Draco Meteor, Flamethrower, Roost, and U-Turn/Defog. Draco Meteor will benefit from STAB (Same Type Attack Bonus), Flamethrower will take care of any ice types or similarly help with type coverage, Roost will help you shake off any non-lethal hits, and U-Turn/Defog are used to make switching easier or clear hazards respectively.

How to Catch Noivern in Pokemon Go

If you are looking for a Noivern in Pokemon Go, be prepared for quite the struggle. Both Noivern and Noibat can spawn in the wild, but their typing and rarity makes it difficult to find. Finding a Noibat alone can be rather difficult considering its rarity, but evolving a Noibat requires an absurd 400 candies to evolve into Noivern. On top of this, it has yet to appear as a raid boss in Pokemon Gyms. Hopefully it is added eventually, but until then, you will need to find enough rare Noibats to have 400 candies to evolve into Noivern.

Trivia

  1. Noivern and Crobat share a slew of similarities. Their health, defense, and special defense base stats are identical and they both have access to Infiltrator as an ability.
  2. The name Noivern is a portmanteau of the words noise and wyvern.
  3. Noivern’s design and Pokedex entry is likely inspired by the long-eared bat or the fruit bat.

FAQ

Is Noivern a Good Pokemon?

If you want a speedy dragon type for casual play, Noivern can fit that role just fine. However, if you are looking to build a team in competitive battling, it may be best to find another Pokemon. Noivern is not particularly powerful in any regard other than its speed. Therefore, its usability in competitive battling is rather limited.

What is 715 in the Pokedex?

The 715th Pokemon in the Pokedex is Noivern. Every Pokemon is assigned a rather arbitrary number depending on which generation it is in and if any part of its evolution line is present before or after. The number is arbitrary as it does not signify its history or when it was designed, rather certain qualifying factors like whether it is a starter or whether its evolutionary line is present before or after.

Is Noivern a Legendary?

Noivern is not a legendary Pokemon. It does not meet the classifications for a legendary Pokemon in any regard. Noivern can be bred, it evolves from another Pokemon, and its catch rate is not reflective of other legendary Pokemon. There is nothing about Noivern that qualifies it as a legendary Pokemon.

Conclusion

Congratulations, you now know just about everything there is to know about this sound wave Pokemon. Noivern may not have had the biggest impact on competitive Pokemon, but its sound based design is food for fan theories of a possible sound/noise typing that could be introduced in the future. While there is not too much that sets Noivern apart from other Pokemon, if you need a fast flying or dragon type Pokemon, you can easily fill the slot with Noivern.
