Sony’s new rules for its PlayStation Stars rewards scheme have come into force, effectively changing how long your points last and how they can be earned.
On Thursday (October 24), players received an email warning them to agree to the new terms of service or risk losing their points.
For the unfamiliar, PlayStation Stars dishes out points for completing specific in-game activities or challenges or making PlayStation Store purchases, The points can then be exchanged for digital trinkets and games. You can access them via the official PlayStation mobile app, where you can claim the latest rewards and collectibles.
Here’s what you need to know about the new guidelines and how they impact your points.
When do PS Stars points expire?
With the new rules in place, any newly earned points will now expire after 13 months, compared to 24 months previously.
It can be easy to forget that PS Stars even exists, so the update may push players into opening the app more often to keep tabs on their points and the latest rewards.
It could also help to cut costs for Sony, especially if it results in fewer unredeemed points on the company’s books, players forgetting to redeem points on games altogether, and spending points more often on lower-value items than saving up for big-ticket games.
What can you earn points on?
Alongside the new use-by date, Sony won’t offer points on subscription purchases on the PS Store from March 2025, including for the likes of PS Plus, GTA+, Ubisoft+ and EA Play.
This tweak is sure to be just as divisive, seeing as rolling subscriptions were one of the easiest ways to amass points, especially during sales events like Days of Play.
Is anything else changing?
Some users have also noticed that they can no longer redeem points for store credit. However, this may be a temporary or regional change or a glitch (we know PS Stars is prone to them, after all) as not all players appear to be impacted by it.
There’s also no mention of this change on the PS Stars terms of service, which still state that you can redeem points for PSN Wallet funds.
